Chukar and Bull Run are in good shape with 12" grass two days ago. Tokatee was wet and soft last week. Have not checked out Kinzua, Santiam, Silver Lake, Makenzie, Rager, this year. Hood River is a great stop on your way down, get a burger at Twin Peaks, west end of strip. Bend has cheap fuel and a BBQ style restaurant on the field. Photo of Chukar Monday......

Dont want to go more south than Grant, want to meet there Sunday?

Thanks for the info on the other strips.
On my route to Grant will fly to Bull Run and Chukar Flats airstrips.

Those canyons have power lines, cables of any sort?

Re: Oregon strips this weekend

I agree with rob56 on Bull Run and Chukar Flats. I'll be at Pacific City if you are in the area. Stop by and say hi. Coffee is always on. Lunch 12 dinner 6.

Flying M, Powers, Lucas Lodge are grass. I don't know if they are ready for use yet.

I would go with you BUT, committed to building two houses for my son and daughter. Framing crew coming 30th. I'm slammed. Lucky to get away Saturday and Sunday.

Cheer...Rob

Yes there are lines. I don't know where they all are, but I have seen them.

Did you bring the new table in? I was there on Sunday and that wasn't there.

Bull Run is in the best condition that I have ever seen it. The desert is green, which is unusual.

I'll be out and about this weekend and will keep my eye out for you Motodave.

The rattlesnakes will be out in the canyon with clear skies and higher temps.

Ok I've found Chukar Flat on Google Maps, is Bull Run AKA McKinnon Airpark at 45.430568, -122.244755? Doesn't look too much like a desert, so I think it is elsewhere.

I'm making a list for 2020 USA avaition extravaganza in 2020. Living vicariously till then!

Re: Oregon strips this weekend

After Oregon, the plan is to fly to Johnson creek for camping, will it be open?(care taker) or too early in the season?
What are other options to stay /or camp this time of the year?

Bull Run is 22 miles north west of Chukar on the Dechutes River. Look on shortfield.com

If you're heading that way after Chukar Flats check out Reds and Minam in the Wallowas. Then check out the Hells Canyon strips.

Caretakers come in on Memorial Day weekend. If you're there before then, you'll only have access to toilets. Still good camping. The grass might be a bit spongy and might take a bit more power to get around. Otherwise, from other FB posts I've seen, it looks like some of the lower strips are open and in great shape.

I would recommend looking at the chart for the power line locations prior to flying in to the canyons. They are depicted accurately.

There are a few spots where the power lines cross the Deschutes River. There is a line of low power poles just downstream from Bull Run. I don't think that there is line strung between those poles.

There are power lines low on the John Day, but not many too far up stream or near Chuckar Flats.

Re: Oregon strips this weekend

If you are in the area of Memaloose (25U) I would appreciate a pilot report on condition. It is a definite must see in my book, but it might be wet on the north end of the strip. Thinking of stopping in on Memorial Day.

+1 on Memaloose. Camping on the edge of the canyon is great. If it is landable take the hike to Hat Point lookout tower to the north.

Re: Oregon strips this weekend

If you are a member of the Idaho Aviation Association www.idahoaviation.com , there is a page for pireps on the strips in their area.

Non-members may be able to access it as well. Good current info.

Fly safely.

Loved Chuckar Flats, Reds was very pretty and challenging because it was very wet and with deep tire track ruts, Wilson Bar,Cabin Creek,Soldier Bar,Lower loon, and Bernard are in great shape, and the scenery was prettier than ever with green colored mountains.

Tomorrow fly back via Chuckar Flats and Bull Run, any other strip in the area?

To whomever brought in the new picnic table, THANKS! My wife and I put on a coat of Thompson's water seal on the old one a few years ago, but it's been slowly falling apart.
