Last year's mid-week T-storm leveled many tents. Mine had slight damage, some bent poles, which Big Agnes fixed for me after I returned home (for free--great customer service!). But some tents were irreparable.Something else not to skimp on is your tent. If you live in Texas then you know what a thunderstorm is. Make sure your tent can take the rain and wind loads that a T-storm will subject it to.
So far as I know, only one airplane, in the display area, was damaged by the storm, but I'm sure some really rocked. Wisconsin storms, based on my OSH experiences, are typically pretty short but pretty vicious. As already mentioned don't skimp on the tie-downs.
So yeah, a good tent and good tie-downs are essential.
