OWL STOL Kit Data?

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Pretty sure the Owl kit was taken over by Horton.

Nothing very technical from "back in the day", but fun to read. My 182H got the Owl in 1969. They even put a stencil on the tail !ImageImageImageImageImageImage

I especially like the part where holding a spoon under a faucet shows you what the "Owl" can do !

I called Horton and they denied that they had any info on the owl.

Re: OWL STOL Kit Data?

I called Horton last year and asked about wingtip compatability with Owl leading edge. They said nope.

Re: OWL STOL Kit Data?

My weight & balance states that my plane only gained six pounds when the Owl was installed. Seems light ? The brochures I posted are pretty complete - but absolutely no real data. In conversations through the years - the general consensus is that the Owl made the wing very similar to the new leading edge Cessna began using in 1973. and looking at the difference in the profile around the landing light opening, seems very similar to the Horton, but not quite as much difference. To me, it looks like the Horton extends a touch further, and has a bit more "lip".

Re: OWL STOL Kit Data?

Do you already have one of these kits installed, or are you considering installing one?

If you're considering a leading edge cuff, I wouldn't even consider installing anything except the Sportsman, even if the Owl kit was free. I know several folks who have removed Horton or Owl kits and installed Sportsman kits. And, never looked back.

Re: OWL STOL Kit Data?

Do you have this installed still? If so do you have Filler on your leading edge? I just removed mine and it had a TON of filler.

That's pretty atrocious Bryan, glad you're doing that and not me!

Maybe once you get all that filler peeled off you'll have a lighter airplane?

Do you still have the paperwork on the OWL kit?

Re: OWL STOL Kit Data?

It's the SA995. I have looked and can't find the original install information. I have the STC paperwork, just not the install!

Thanks. The full stc number is SA995SW.
FAA records show that stc as being held by Bob & Barbara Williams, of Bush STOL fame (or infamy).
Does your paperwork say it's an OWL kit?
I'm wondering if the Bush, Horton, & Owl stol kits aren't actually all the same stc-- just with different names.
