Re: P.ponking the C180

Any reason you like those seat stops over say they seat-belt style ones? I think I know the answer, but would like to hear your reasons.

Chief thing is probably ease of taking seats in and out. Next being weight and simplicity. And if Cessna doesn't cover the co-pilot installation, or the window has closed for free parts and labor, then there's cost too. There are inertia-reel installations out there where the floor mounting bolt is made to unscrew easily by hand, but that's not an approved alteration to my knowledge.

Apologies to the OP for the drift.

Re: P.ponking the C180

Yingling told me that the inertial real parts are still reimbursed if you show proof of installation. $1100 for parts. Has anyone been able to get reimbursed?

That is a pretty picture.

Think I'd make it my screensaver if I was in your shoes.

Very enjoyable thread.

Any idea if carb ice issues increase with the higher displacement?

I have heard that there is an increased propensity for ice to accumulate in the carburetor with the -50 engines.

Re: P.ponking the C180

25+ years with the same 180; about 1/2 with the O-470R, 1/2 with the O-470-50. Upstate NY, 4-season airplane.

No increase in carb ice with the Pponk(really not much carb ice, period)

For the OP; my friend and I enjoy the heck out of these Pponk 180's, both with the 401 prop; excellent choice!

Re: P.ponking the C180

That's good to hear. Flown a bit in an O-550 powered 180 and it was constantly making carb ice.

Looking forward to hearing how she performs!

Re: P.ponking the C180

I use to think the carb ice was worse but I have since found a couple big issues that were contributing after my engine change. Now I think it's the same as the 470R I removed.

Curious about your "big issues" contributing to carb ice? Getting ready then hang a pponk on our 182 as well.

Has anyone experimented with slight preheating of fuel/air charge to get better fuel/air distribution?

Re: P.ponking the C180

I've found that while partial carb heat does allow for better leaning; I lose a few mph. So while the GPH is lower, the MPG is only slightly improved.

What does work for me, when using full throttle up high, is to bring back the throttle slightly before starting the leaning process. Just a little bit, enough to see the MP change a hair.

Sure.
1. My biggest issue was I converted to a late model 180 muffler carb heat set up and no longer used the ram air shroud that the 57 originally had. This left two giant holes on the front of my cowling that I stupidly flew around with for most of a season. The cold air flowing in on the air intake side of the engine made it 10x worse for carb ice. I guess all the hot air flowing down over the intake system, in normal operation, helps considerably.
2. Someone had modified the carburetor main jet to considerably larger then what pponk calls for. This made it run very very rich. That helped the icing issue to the point I consider the 470 and o520 to pretty dang similar in carb ice likelihood.
