PA-12 Camping

Managed to get a little good weather last week and took the new PA-12 out for a camping trip with the wife. She's a real sport at 8.5 months pregnant flying in to spend a night in the woods (although she only packed 1 sleeping bag for the two of us  ). After having had the 12 for the last week and a half I've managed to put just over 11 hours on it. It would be more if the weather would cooperate. The plane is an amazing performer. It has 150-hp with a cruise prop and still rips it off the water at gross on a hot day. Useful load is about 675 and it hauls 36 gallons usable. It's a simple cub and luckily it's on floats so I'm not tempted to start tinkering, I've got all sorts of ideas and mods I'd like....but for now I plan on just flying it. Here's some pics.

Re: PA-12 Camping

There is no way that woman is 8.5 months pregnant!! My wife look like she had swallowed a large beach ball :P

She obviously knew there would be plenty of room for both of you in the one sleeping bag - and she isn't going to get any more preggers than she is already!

Re: PA-12 Camping

Every so often, we talk about "if we decide to leave Fort Collins to retire, we'll move to Anacortes or Oak Harbor." If we did that, I'd be looking for a seaplane before we turned the TV on for the first time! I don't think I'd give up my airplane, which I dearly love, but try to find something like a Cub on straight floats to add to the stable. I had so much fun getting my seaplane rating last month!

Re: PA-12 Camping

Cary,

Hate to break it to you, Anacortes is a great place to live but not a very good place for an airplane on straight floats. No place to park on straight floats and mostly salt water around except for a few lakes. Now if you have amphib floats its a different story but still a lot of salt water. Pretty area to live and fly around, just not as straight float friendly as it seems.

Alaska, Minnesota, Michigan, Maine, New York are good float states.

Just my humble opinion...

Re: PA-12 Camping

Love theses pics and getting out there and using your PA-12~! After getting a decent amount of float flying up in AK this summer.. It's my new incurable lust/addiction. problem is I live in AZ. There is water to float fly here and would be some great camping options, but need an amphib. :/

Re: PA-12 Camping

This is one of the advantages of living in the way north NY. We have lots of water. My plane is located on the Racquette River, head North and hit the St. Lawrence Seaway you can go anywhere. Follow the river uphill to the south and quickly we get into the Adirondacks where you can pond hop for weeks...Went down to Lake Champlain today and met up with some friends on a sailboat. Found some waves that were a bit bigger than were "fun" but the Cruiser did well. Today's flight put me over 20 hours on 94M.

Lots of water...
