Re: Pacer Bush Build???

OK you Pacer fans, I have available about 12-15 data tags + log books with about 10 fusalage's, 2 sets of wings and so much other junk, I mean stuff from doors to nose wheels , fuel tanks, cranks, pulleys to awe just a bunch of parts.
Have one tripacer fuselage that is covered and ready to go. would be a great time to turn the gear around and put the wheel on the correct end
If anyone is interested???????? #-o
Bring 2 40' vans and we can fillem up.

X2 on this point. 180 stabs are vulnerable and spendy.

Not counting your time, when everything is said & done I wouldn't be surprised if you had as much into a Pacer build as what you can buy an entry-level C180 for -- about $60K. And it'll probably be a less capable airplane to boot.

Having owned both; A pacer and 3 180/185's....I'd have be agree. I will add a couple of options though to think about.

1) Keep it a pacer and run the 150/160 engine with a climb prop. keep it as light as possible and run VG's. That's as cheap a off road bird as they come. Anymore than that and you are creeping up into NICE used Maules and Solid early 180's. Both will outperform at that price point.

2) The market has stabilized significantly and I actually think stock early 180's are undervalued right now. Everyone wants all the mods and big engines, but I still think a mid to late 50's 180 kept light are more capable than the pilot flying it. A clean, stock late 50's 180 with extended baggage, a set of 8.50's on the mains is a beast.

My pacer never saw a paved strip. I operated (solo with full gas) in and out of 1200' no problem. it was really more of a 600' plane in and a 1000' plane out with two people.

My '55 model 180 (once I figured it out) could get in shorter, get out shorter and was 30 mph faster in cruise. It had a ton more interior space and was comfortable on trips. My '75 180 had all the options and was heavy. My '75 185 has all the options and a little lighter...but my '55 model was "cub light" on the controls and flew like a dream.

I agree, prices do seem low right now for early 180's, esp if they're pretty stock.
I know mine (purchased a year ago) is more capable than I am.

Re: Pacer Bush Build???

You 180 guys are correct up to a point. That point is that long term, the Pacer is going to be cheaper to operate over years.

But, there are benefits to each. I have a friend in MN who has done nearly all the work on his Tri Pacer that is now a Pacer, with a lot of mods. And, I guarantee he doesn't have much money in that plane. It's a blaster. You have to do it right, and look for good used "stuff", and be willing to do most of the work yourself.

Two different friends of mine just each bought a decent, flyable Tri Pacer for $12,000. That's a FLYING airplane, folks. At that starting point, you can buy a lot of mods before you get anywhere near Cessna 180 purchase price, soft market or no. That's also a LOT of airplane for the money.
