Painting 2870's
Information and discussion about seaplanes, float planes, and water operations.
I'm getting ready to paint my 2870's and want to use a 2 part epoxy primer. Can anyone recommend an epoxy primer and silver lacquer for the job. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Not a professional.
I once had an airplane painted with AWLGRIP. Stuff was awesome. I think it gets used a lot on boat hulls in the saltwater on aluminum and steel. Primer base and catalyst if I recall correctly.
I understand lacquer over epoxy primer works as long as you let the epoxy primer "gas off" for a couple of weeks before lacquer is applied. The wait wouldn't be necessary with the proper urethane topcoat.
When all else fails, it is best to ask your paint supplier. They are down with all the latest.
Good luck!

Kenmore, the owner of EDO, currently uses BMS 1011 high solids epoxy primer and Randolph Dull Aluminum Lacquer. Works good, lasts long time.

Is there a reason for using lacquer on floats?

Yes.
Primary reason is repairability. Floats tend to quickly collect scratches, especially when used near docks. Lacquer with very minimal prep will take repair coats and they blend in nicely, kinda melt together.
Additionally thicker paints like urethanes tend to hide filiform corrosion around rivets and seams until it's somewhat advanced and more difficult to repair.
Also it's cheap, lite weight and approved by the manufacturer.
