Painting Wheels

Have any of you guys painted yours beaten up wheels? I know my 182 isn't technically a back country plane, but the paint is coming off of the wheels and I was wondering if a sand, prime, spray paint would work? Thanks in advance.

Re: Painting Wheels

I have repainted cessna wheels twice, both times I took the parts to a sandblasting shop and paid $25.00 to have everything cleaned with "plastic media blasting". It will clean off old paint, corrosion, etc. then prime and paint them.

Re: Painting Wheels

What about wheel covers? Not to be confused with wheel pants, I just mean a hub cover. Know any place that sells them? Maybe I can just refinish some covers and put them on.

Re: Painting Wheels

I've painted several. Clean em up and rattle can em. Krylon makes an industrial paint you can buy on ebay. Have also bought wheel covers on ebay and had them powder coated to match the plane. That's probly my favorite.

Re: Painting Wheels

The appearance you can get by bead blasting and then spraying with a few coats of clear is pretty nice.

Sand Blast, Alodine, Prime and paint.

If you have access to a spray gun use "real paint". Not just rattle can. It will last waaay longer and be less work in the long run.

I Don't know what color was originally used for the silver on the wheels but....
Randolph Continental engine paint looks good. It comes in a quart can from aircraft spruce.
I think it is called gold but it looks more like pewter or silver to me.

I like the girls in bikini's idea but if that doesn't pan out, (like it never does for me). :?

I use a wash brush on a broom handle to keep the cow shit from dripping down my arm.
Get to it as quick as possible. The drier it is the longer it has to soak before it comes off.

If it goes as well as the bikini coffee shop in Salem, Or. you might be selling the plumbing tools. :)

Re: Painting Wheels

For paint you might want to look into POR15, they have some paints just for wheels, probably would work better then normal paint, I've used their stuff to undercoat cars, I read a write up by a chopper pilot who did his skids with one of their products as well.

Anyway here's a link to their aluminum wheel kit
