Panel redo - your input?

Hey guys,

My 182 is VFR only, just a simple O-470. Looking for some feedback on my panel upgrade plans. I've already replaced much of the center stack, including a new transponder which provides gps/traffic/ahrs to my iPad.

My motivation is to get all the right information right in front of my face to keep my eyes up and out of the panel as much as possible, while not being so dense that it's hard to interperet. Here are the changes I'm planning on making:

1. Dual AV-30s, already on pre-order https://uavionix.com/products/av-30/ and vacuum delete. I'm going to leave all the extra features off so they resemble basic instruments since all the data is right beside them in the other instruments.

2. Ditch slip/skid since the AV-30 has a slip indicator, replace it with a CGR 30 with EGT/CHT, fuel flow, oil temp, oil pressure on the front page https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/ ... key=814726

3. That leaves certified fuel level as the only remaining issue, I'm looking at the Aerospace Logic https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/ ... kkey=11059

So here are the areas where I need some input:

1. My POH does not specify a requirement for a voltmeter. There is not room on the CGR-30 for volts/amps on the front page and I'm looking to avoid the cost of dual CGR's. If legal, do you guys see any reason why volts/amps couldn't be on the second page? Is there a good reason not to? If not, I can re-use an existing EI volt/amp instrument, I'm just looking to pare down as many instruments as possible.

2. Is there any other data I should look at displaying? Carb temp? ... ?

Thanks!

Re: Panel redo - your input?

Get a fuel computer like a JPI FS450 or the Electronics International one. This $700 or so item is a must!

Get a good ADSB transponder with in and out capability such as the Garmin GTX 345. On the surface it looks more expensive than other options and in some cases it is but you get value for the extra money. ADSB in with traffic displayed on a Garmin portable such as a 660 is a great aid in addition to your eyeballs looking for traffic. The 345 bluetooth’s this info to your portable Garmin device or IPad. No wires, no Stratus or other boxes on the dash with charging cords or batteries and so on.

The Lynx transponders look like a good unit to consider also.

Also, be careful on wanting to pare down on gauges, too much info in one gauge can be a step backwards. Having a separate voltmeter especially if its already installed would be my preference unless I really need the panel space. Scrolling thru pages to find info leads one to Seldom or never do it and therefore vital info can sometimes be overlooked.

Re: Panel redo - your input?

Thanks!

My center stack is in good shape, just got a new radio, new audio panel, and an Appareo transponder, I use it to link with my iPad for GPS, traffic, and AHRS data.

I hear ya on the volt meter, my gut is telling me it's one of those "if you have to ask..." kind of situations. I'll probably leave it, and set it to the left of the six pack by the fuel level indicator.

Does a fuel computer give me more information over and above the fuel flow from the CGR and the fuel level from the Aerospace logic unit?

Re: Panel redo - your input?

The link for uAvioinx's AV-30 indicates BUSV is an optional field.

I am impressed with Aerospace Logic's simple, uncluttered displays.

Have you considered putting Carb Temp on the CGR-30P's (Premium version) first page, below Oil Pressure & Oil Temp strips? That way non-primary fuel flow could be relegated to secondary screen i.e. page 2. Also, the Premium CGR-30P allows one Primary function (think Volts or Amps) on the secondary screen.

Suggestion: print/draw your desired gages in color on paper, cut them out, then sit in your 182 and tape the paper gages where you think they should go, then consider.

Worth noting, we are offering a $600.00 rebate on our CGR-30P packages and $1200.00 on the CGR-30-Combo packages if purchased by the end of this month. If you were considering making a purchase fairly soon, I may be able to work out a small extension if you were interested.

I appreciate that! I just spent way too much money on my plane as it is, I'm looking towards this fall or next spring for the next stage. Hopefully you're running a deal then too!

Re: Panel redo - your input?

Crg-30p does fuel flow and fuel quantity. I just set one up using stock floats, but you could put IES probes in also.

With fuel flow I rarely look at fuel gauges...

Re: Panel redo - your input?

I’m in the VFR only crowd. I went a different direction with a Garmin G5, JPI Engine monitor (non-certified), a GTX 335 ADSB transponder and an iPad fed by a GDL 50.

In order to satisfy the original type certificate I kept the airspeed indicator and altimeter, but ditched the rest!

(I’ve since installed an Airgizmos mount for the iPad).

Re: Panel redo - your input?

Why are you installing dual AV 30s? You don't need a DG for VFR, and if you leave the heading feature on the AI you'd have it anyways. The AV will also give bus Volts. I would put the extra into the combo CGR and only put in one AV.
On my 206 I put the amps on the second page as a primary, but I needed fuel pressure on page 1. On a 182 you dont need fuel pressure, so what else is on page one? RPM, MP, Oil pressure and temp. You should have room for amps there as well.
And yes, you want carb temp there, it's nice to have.

Re: Panel redo - your input?

I'd considered getting dual CGR's and using the turn/slip and DG holes, I was just having a hard time justifying the second CGR with such a simple engine. But, to your point, the DG doesn't add a whole lot of value either.

But here's my mental image of that scenario:

I'd use the AV-30 to display:
Heading
AOA

That leaves the following for the CGR 30P
1. EGT
2. CHT
3. Fuel Flow
4. Carb temp
5. OAT (could also be on AV-30)
.... basically all engine management metrics

And these for the CGR 30C
1. Fuel level L
2. Fuel level R
3. Oil Pressure
4. Oil Temp
5. Volts
6. Amps
7. ... maybe the CO add-on feature?
8. Tach time
9. blank
10. blank
.... all the systems monitoring metrics

Re: Panel redo - your input?

Did you leave all the stock analog gauges on the other half of your panel?

Re: Panel redo - your input?

I would clear out the right side panel of everything.

Here is a crappy excel version of what I'm talking about:

Re: Panel redo - your input?

Contrarian question... What are you trying to acomplish by spending $8,000 dollars? You aren't adding much functionality that you don't already have. It is just flashier and will catch your eye more easily.

Having asked that, I have a CGR30 and really like it. Especially the alarming functions.

You aren't that far from Dynon money for a single 7" display that would have more functionality in the future.

Which JPI engine gizmo is that?
And since it's non-certified, I assume you kept your original required engine instruments over on the RH side of the panel?
Any problem with your IA over tthat monitor not being certified?

It’s the EDM-830. Yes, I have to keep certified engine instruments in place, therefore no problems with my IA. As gauges in my cluster go out, I’ll figure out how to replace them. Last summer my tach went out so I bought a certified dual RPM/MP Aerospace Logic gauge.

I went with the non-certified unit for cost- the certified replacement is almost double the price. In the end, though I’ll probably end up spending just as much when I have to replace things, but it’s spread out instead of all at once.

Re: Panel redo - your input?

Ditch the CGR-30 and replace that with a JPI EDM 900 or 930. Those present all required data on one page. By the time you buy two CGR 30s, you'd be cheaper and more compact to go JPI. Mine works great. I didn't want fuel quantity, but that's also available on the EDMs....again on the front page.

That's a great question, the precision of fuel information is my primary concern, along with overall increased confidence in the health of my engine. I'm a worry wart, I'd feel a lot better having better data on the health of my engine while flying over mountainous terrain. Besides, it's either paying a shrink 150/hr or spending money on my plane, I chose the latter

Re: Panel redo - your input?

You can install a 2" engine monitor, such as a GEM or JPI, plus a Shadin fuel flow for a lot less than $8K.
