Panel Shock Mounts

I need to replace the instrument panel shock mounts in my '56 C172. The ones stocked by Spruce and a number of other suppliers have steel studs instead of brass. Has anyone used these shock mounts with steel studs and if so did you have any issues with your compass?

Thanks.

Re: Panel Shock Mounts

It's not a problem to find the brass, but shock mounts with steel threads can be had for less that half the price. I've read on another site that quite a few people are using the mounts with steel threads. I was wondering whether anyone here had any first hand experience with them as related to compass issues.

Thanks.

Re: Panel Shock Mounts

I put the aircraft spruce steel stud shock mounts into my 57 C-172, no problems with the compass at all.

Re: Panel Shock Mounts

Do you guys feel these shock mounts are really necessary? I had a couple damaged and/or badly sagging ones on my last airplane-- I just replaced all of them with stainless machine screws & aluminum spacers. Didn't notice any difference in how the instruments worked or held up.

My current airplane has 10 or 12 shock mounts holding the panel on. They are starting to sag, no big deal except that now the panel is a little too close to the pull switches below. $65-70 for replacement shock mounts from Spruce, but I've thought about going the machine screw / spacer route again.

Thoughts?

No I don't, but when I re-did my panel, the AI I had overseeing my work decided to go back with the shock mounts. I also had to use the same size 1/4" aluminum stock for the panel, his concern was that it was "structural", which I found odd since it used the shock mounts. Bet I could have used a much thinner material and been fine, but his signature was on the line

Re: Panel Shock Mounts

Cliff you are the man. Just ordered a set from McMaster-Carr. I'd looked at their mounts but missed the ones with the brass threads.

Thanks very much.
