Panel - Ultimate in Light Weight

You guys remember the iCub from a few years back? Well, now it is easy to make that a reality. I ran across the iLevil AW has WAAS GPS, AHRS, ADSB-IN and static/dynamic ports for airspeed and altimeter in a small 4"x2.5"x1" package. This thing hooks through WiFi to an Ipad and will work on several different apps. One of the apps is AHRS Utility which shows a flight display.

A Grand Rapids EIS can be wired into the iLevil AW to show engine instruments on the AHRS Utility app.

Pretty cool and very light weight.

That's the jump seat for in back. It also serves as survival gear, in case of a forced landing in an area devoid of firewood-- or stumps to sit on while awaiting rescue.

Re: Panel - Ultimate in Light Weight

Funny, I just saw the ilevil a couple days ago and thought it looked pretty cool.

IIRC, it is for backup only, not primary avionics, is that correct?

It can be primary in a experimental. They said they have lots of customers that have made it their primary.

I'm not a tech head so 'splain me how this works. Wifi means you'll be getting the flight instrument imput to this gizmo via cell towers? Or is the wifi thing a way to download data to your separate device for review later?

If you want a light & simple panel, IMHO Piper figured it out years ago-- check any J3.

Re: Panel - Ultimate in Light Weight

The iLevil AW transmits the wifi signal and your ipad picks up that signal. Your just connecting the iLevil to your ipad via wifi instead of using a cord. No cell towers needed. I'd venture a guess that the iLevil and a ipad weigh quite a bit less than even a J3 panel and if you know how to connect a mobile device to a wifi router you'd agree it is pretty simple. I'm still installing steam gauges in my Bearhawk though.

I believe it starts out life as iLevil but when stuff goes sideways it becomes LiL Evil.

I know the wifi router ( aka "hot spot") that my laptop uses for internet access just drops off-line every now & then. Way too often for me to ever trust it to transmit flight info to the panel of an airplane.
Good idea on sticking with the steam gauges IMHO.

Re: Panel - Ultimate in Light Weight

I got an email back from iLevil. I asked them about being able to monitor all EGT/CHTs and perform data logging through the AW/AHRS Utility app. They said all EGT/CHT temperatures are available for viewing if you tap on the temperature icon. Data logging is not currently offered though the app but it is something they are willing to add.

My reasoning for the query is because I'm not really enthusiastic about installing a expensive engine monitor in a plane that will be sitting on a ramp. A GRT EIS 6000 is ~$1400 and will provide all information needed to fly the plane but the display isn't great and you have to scroll though the menu to see everything. Adding the iLevil AW and a iPad will provide a nice graphic display of the information provided by the GRT EIS. A GRT EIS ($1400), iLevil AW ($1400) and an iPad($600 for wifi 64GB) come to close to the same price as a Dynon D180 but will have ADS-B weather, GPS and I'll be about to take the iPad home so I'm not worried about a thief stealing my "glass." If the iPad gets stolen/lost/broken I can still fly because I'll have steam gauges for flight instruments and the GRT EIS for engine instruments. Sounds really cool and could work real slick.

Slight thread drift, but Cary found a screen protector that cut down the glare on his tablet. Can't remember which one, but should be easy enough to find.

Re: Panel - Ultimate in Light Weight

I agree with Hotrod 180's thoughts on the J-3 panel. Or just cover everything over with aluminum painted flat black, for the glare, and look out the window. That stuff is nice but don't forget that the visual in VFR means outside.

Re: Panel - Ultimate in Light Weight

Looking outside is why I fly. I'm not looking to run foreflight or anything as I still prefer having my finger on a paper map and my eyes outside. Basic VFR instruments are the only flight instruments I'm planning to install. However I want a full digital engine monitor, I'm thinking a Dynon D180 or this iLevil AW with a GRT EIS would be a good way to achieve what I'm looking for. I do worry that I'll soon be left on my own with the D180 because it is an older model. With the iLevil all I'd need to do is buy a new iPad and download a new app.

I'd like to give an android a chance but there are no apps available to do what I'm looking for.

There are some really interesting tech offerings popping up left and right. Whatever you end up going with will be awesome in the Bearhawk, and I can't wait to see how it turns out!
