Re: Pet peeves

Admittedly I have heard some annoying radio procedure especially foreigners I can't understand. However I believe the problem originates from the CFI or at least I can share anecdotal evidence.
My CFI was so hung up about the correct jargon that he aggressively let it be known that he was the only one in the world who knew the correct way to speak on the radio. He would yell at other pilots directly or internally via intercom regarding the wrong use or nervous chatter. He was so hung up that he performed all radio procedure most of the time.
IMHO this coming from a CFI is just wrong . It didn't bother me so much since I had a lot of experience in the military communicating via radio but others have been done a great injustice. They fear talking to flight following because they don't want to be ridiculed or make a mistake. They don't do PIREPS, Flight watch, Flight service. and on and on.
There are articles about the lack of use for these services and I am convinced that part of the problem is the inability to teach. Just because a great pilot becomes a CFI doesn't mean he is a good teacher. Some people pick up different techniques at a different pace and radio work can be the hardest thing to learn for some and requires patience.
I have encountered some controllers that get miffed if you " Say Again" them even though they were stepped on. Personally it doesn't bother me because I'll keep asking until I get the Xponder Code etc. but I know pilots that will never fly anywhere they need to talk to anyone. I know this is dangerous and I encourage them to talk and screw anybody who doesn't like there lack of experience or confidence.
IMHO it is up to all of us in this very small community that is dwindling away daily to be team players and help these pilots to improve rather than ignore their use of the radio. I'd rather have the guy speaking a wrong word or two opposed to not knowing he is there at all!

I asked him once. He declined. He can't handle the pressure. He may have seen dead bodies and fought fires but moderation around here is a whole new level of extreme.

And with that kind of responsibility he would not be able to stir the stink around here like he does.

I have seen many different pilots do this. Where do they learn this??

My old friend who operated the FBO in CO where I grew up was a cranky old bastard. When someone did that, he'd not say a word and meet them at their airplane with a broom. The governor's pilots even got to sweep the hangar once.

He was a class act.

Ok, this has been building over quite some time. Maybe it is lack of sunlight in the Canadian winter, not being in an alcholic stupor, or the frustration of not flying because the ski plane is being recovered, (I have however logged untold hours of internet flying in the last two months). Anyway, here it is: after reading through BCP this morning it happened, one too many posts from someone that seems to have the need to post on every subject, if only a smiley. Size matters, do post counts?

Cabin fever (also known as House Syndrome) is an idiomatic term for a claustrophobic reaction that takes place when a person or group is isolated and/or shut in, in a small space, with nothing to do, for an extended period (as in a simple country vacation cottage during a long rain or snow). Symptoms include restlessness, irritability, irrational frustration with everyday objects, forgetfulness, laughter, excessive sleeping, distrust of anyone they are with, and an urge to go outside even in the rain, snow or dark.

Perhaps you missed this thread?? (http://www.backcountrypilot.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=2397&hilit=im+addicted) Read it. Maybe you'll understand some of us a little more.

BTW..... Absolutely no offense taken in any way, shape, or form!

My problem has been that I'm pretty much almost broke. Almost living pay check to pay check trying my damn-dist to pay the mortgage, hangar rent, aircraft payment, aircraft insurance, other bills and trying hard to save some money for a new engine in my plane! Finally this month, I got caught up on some bills and things are starting to look good. In the mean time, I've been just working my ass off at work and when I get home, this is about all I do, read BackCountryPilot.org and FaceBook. Pretty cheap entertainment (But, I'm still willing to send some money to Zane for this great web site), with lots of great info, story's and pictures to go through!!

So, what really is the purpose of a forum or social network?? I thought it was for chatting, sharing information, sharing story's, etc. Yeah, I'll agree that a lot of times I don't share too much useful info everyday or even once a week. Maybe I do just throw in a one or two sentence jab or comment, or even a stupid childish smiley often. For me, I think it's fun and get's my mind off other things.

I'm I wearing out my welcome by some here? If I am, please let me know. I'll gladly shut up and leave and take my stupid smileys with me :)

I could come up with another cheap and inexpensive hobby I guess. Free porn on the internet is always good. But that makes me tired and I hear it makes you go blind

Re: Pet peeves

Thought I'd post a few of my thoughts here as I'm guilty of some and agree with others...

Straight is: I do 'em and I love them. They require me to be in the air less and therefore burn less fuel. My company, therefore, saves money and my kids are more likely to get college educated as a result. If you are back taxiing then that's fine. Take your time. No need to hurry on my account as I'll fly the pattern or loiter till you're gone or whatever. But I'm not going to over fly each and every non-towered field on the slight chance you someone else is back-taxiing for the above stated reasons.

"Clear of the active": I do this too, but I instead say "clear of all runways". Maybe this slight modification gets me out from under your ire.

123.45: okay, it seems to me that 122.75 air-to-air should be reserved for guys in formation flight. That is air-to-air that's important talk and it's what air-to-air is intended for. Two guys babbling about where the truck is parked should stay off that freq. Some unused polar freq in the midwest seems like a logical choice for 'where's the truck' talk. Fingers works pretty well for me and I have never had a problem.

New Peeve:

Guys who do a runup with me behind them, the runway in front, and a runup pad to the side. Really, why can't you get out of the way? If I'm IFR waiting on a clearance then I'll pull into the pad. If I'm sitting there watching you test carb heat then I'd rather be flying.

RJ pilots that try WAY too hard to sound cool on the radio.

Agreed Peeve: Tally-Ho.

I think it comes from the RAF and the USAF picked it up during WWII. Now it's like herpes and we can't get rid of it.

It means "traffic in sight."

As in:
ATC: Cessna123 you have traffic at 11:00, one mile, one thousand above a Baron.

Cessna123: Tally-Ho

Me: Cringe

...oh, that reminds me of another peeve: Herpes.

Re: Pet peeves

I had the Chief pilot and senior crew drag me into a beat down meeting just before my upgrade to Aircraft Commander. They didnt like my 13 thousand foot call. " Wilco, climb and maintain thirteen, one, three thousand" . They didnt like the Thirteen. Spent 40 minutes defending myself. One of the Senior Commanders would still call out Tally ho and no joy. I could give a shit what he said on the radio but after 40 minutes of them spouting profesionalism on the radio, I had to bring it up. I am glad that that was all they could come up with in their premeeting. Made AC the following Monday. Sometimes Local pilots would want me to make a lot of calls for dropping meat. 3 min, 2 min, 1 min, jumpers away. At 14K feet Im stepping on a lot of unicom freqs and trying to work with Center. Some student pilot has his hands full trying to make a base call doesnt need me stepping all over him. When the freq is quiet I dont mind giving the info to help inbound pilots.

Re: Pet peeves

I fly around the Balto/Washington D.C. area. We hear "Tally-ho" a lot and I find myself using it. I also used it in the Army. I believe it is somewhat the same as a fox hunt, where it simple means quarry or the hunted is in sight or has been spotted. It's easier and quicker to say "Tally-ho" than "Traffic in Sight". I never, Military or civilian, had anyone question the use of the term and most controllers are happy just to hear you have the traffic. In this Tri-Class B area communication is very important and you are judged by how you sound over the radio. It can often be the difference between getting in and remain outside the class B.
