Aero Commander. Same as Bob Hoover used to fly,(well there are model differences, hard to say it is the exact same)

Re: Photo thread: Ramp Mummies

I love Aero Commanders! I saw one take off yesterday from PVU in the rain. The guy banked about 45 degrees and headed off to the West. Those planes move! If I could justify (or afford) one, I would have one for sure. They just sold one off ebay for $12,000 that had mid time engines. I think it was a divorce sale. It was stripped down to paint and the nose was off. I've seen a lot of them go for under $40K, probably because that is what an annual would cost too?

That must be the guy on Craigs List in Juneau looking for C-140 parts. I believe he was looking for wing and strut parts :( I'll sell him the whole plane :D

Taxied past it today. It's a 170B registered in Douglas AK.

Re: Photo thread: Ramp Mummies

There's a stripped Twin Commander at PATK at the public tie downs -looks like it has been there for at least ten years.

First one I ever saw close up was at Blythe CA, chase plane for one of the Goodyear blimps (which was also tied down nearby =D> )

Many of them are still in service with the US Forest Service as fire patrol and bomber lead planes, though as I understand it they are being replaced in some cases with King Airs? I can't imagine low level recon from a King Air?

I guess these are not "ramp" mummies, but they are mummies:

I've looked at these every week for the last 8 years.

Yes, it was me.

Re: Photo thread: Ramp Mummies

Zona,
These two airplanes are parked at the Rosalia, Washington Airport. I land there for cheap 100LL $3.98 a gallon. Sorry but I don't have the computer skills to photo-shop anything. They simply sank into the asphalt over the years.

An old time description of a plane that's been sitting a loooonnngggg time: "It's sinking into the pavement". And, that's the reason why.

The sad thing about these last few photos is they look in better condition than some I see flying

Re: Photo thread: Ramp Mummies

This 182B has been parked at Morgan County Apt in Utah for quite a while. It is a mess but the cowl is the best I have ever seen. My cowl is about to fall off the plane. Wonder if anybody would notice if I swapped them out while I am here

Re: Photo thread: Ramp Mummies

Tim, I saw that 182 last year. I thought it was a taildragger the way it was sitting. Here is one I saw last week while I was in Arkansas. It looks fast even sitting on the ground! Has a glass panel too. Looks like it had a gear up landing because there is still dirt all over the belly.
