Re: Photo thread: Ramp Mummies

At one point back ~30 yrs ago you could buy a 336 out of TAP (Trade-a-...) and part out the engines, radios, etc and make money on the deal.

Now with the 'Fast Glass' airplanes that have come out with solid gear over recent years, some of the younger pilots may wonder why a 336 (down only) used was so much cheaper than a 337 used (folding gear). At that point in time REAL MEN folded their gear when they flew. (See the other SE Cessna products that gained the 'R' for retractable in that era.)

With clothing, the opposite of NOMEX is polypro (polypropylene cloth and fleece).

Would you believe this plane (DeHaviland Comet) passed between Ed & I just south of Mitchell South Dakota on our way to Oshkosh in '03? I later saw it at OSH but couldn't find out who was flying it.

Re: Photo thread: Ramp Mummies

I am sure most of you boys and girls have already checked out this website. For those who haven't, make sure you have some time. I have spent way too many hours (days actually) reading about some of these lost propliners. I believe the owner of the site is Canadian, but he does take photos on his travels all over the place. He also has a huge compilation of photos that other people have taken (all used with permission of course).

Here are some of the interesting ones, just to wet your whistle:
Found here: http://www.ruudleeuw.com/search116.htm

http://www.ruudleeuw.com/images/search/ ... hter-1.jpg

http://www.ruudleeuw.com/images/search/ ... sala-1.jpg

Be sure to check out his other pictures of propliner mummies on the ramp:
Found from here: http://www.ruudleeuw.com/index1.htm

Like I said, if you go to his homepage (http://www.ruudleeuw.com), you can spend hours clicking on all the interconnecting links to his different pages, each with research done on the aircraft in the photos.

PS: Sorry, I could not get the images to embed. It keeps giving me a "It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image." error. If somebody could point out what I was doing wrong, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

This Luscombe is sitting near the big Cutter hangar in KABQ. Was there for at least 20 years. Allegedly the owner also has a nice Mooney in hangars on the Atlantic side, where Quiet Birdmen assemble. He pays the rent and rebuffs all purchase advances.

KGEY. As of Nov 2011, most are still there when I stopped there to poke around.

Ah man. 310 is my favorite twin. Probably good from far. But this plane looks in good shape. Except the props and probably the underside :?

That 170 is at Lesser Slave Lake if memory serves. Wherever it is, I know I've tied down next to it a time or three. First time would have been in 2003, and it was looking pretty neglected then.

Now it seems only REAL MEN drag their tail when they fly. A beat up 180 is still $15k-$20k more than my modest 182...and I have yet to make a twirly in my seat in a 30 kt crosswind like I would with 20 kts in the dragger.

I agree with that..... I know of 2 slant tail 172's sitting at the end of my runway, both are for sale..... 8K for one and 7K for the other..... Need a little work but not near as much as that thing on E-Pay

Re: Photo thread: Ramp Mummies

This is at least the 3rd time this plane has been advertised on craigs list, ebay, or whatever. Several years ago it was listed at $15,000, as-is, where-is, same bunch of photos.
