I assume you're talking about my post of Oct. 10.
Let's look at it from his and his parents' standpoint. Here's a 15 year old kid whose mouthy comments deserved some discipline, no argument there.
But did he deserve as "discipline" to be bodily picked up by a 45 year old gym teacher who outweighed him by 60 pounds and slammed against the lockers? Since when is it proper discipline for
any adult to man-handle a 120 lb. kid for being mouthy? Is that a good image for any teacher to project, that a physical assault is the right answer to a lewd comment? As it happens, the kid wasn't hurt other than minor bruising--but how hard is too hard, potentially resulting in serious injury?
Here's the real question:
Since when does a 45 year old teacher who acts like a bully toward students not deserve some discipline himself? What would you suggest instead, charge him criminally with assault and battery? That would have been a slam-dunk prosecution, and it would have destroyed his career. Or perhaps you'd prefer that the teacher, in spite of his stepping way, way over the line, should get no discipline at all? How would that be fair, or proper?
No, I think that what the kid learned was that there is proper behavior and improper behavior, and those who engage in improper behavior, whether they be children or adults, should be fairly penalized. I don't pretend to have all of the answers to how to discipline kids or adults--I don't think anyone does. But I do know when someone has stepped over the line of proper behavior enough that he must be disciplined.
BTW, experienced teachers in that District's schools are all paid a good living wage. Losing his 20% bonus for being a gym teacher wasn't going to be comfortable (that is, after all, the purpose of discipline), but neither he nor his family were going to starve.
