In Hawaii we get Lazer beam NOTAMS at Barber's and Honolulu. Some malicious individual is suspected to have injured pilots with a strong Lazer beam. On purpose.

I wonder if the NTSB should get a report from the guy that got shot? NTSB can add the category into the primary search fields.

This just doesn't surprise me at all. I work in law enforcement in a pretty high crime area. The running joke with all of us on New Year's Eve is to park your patrol car under a bridge at 2355 hours, to avoid the inevitable rain of bullets that seems to appear shortly after midnight. I have no idea why this seems like a good idea to anyone, but apparently New Year's Eve is the BEST time to fire your gun straight up into the air.

Don't get me wrong, I love my shooting sports. But, seriously, common sense goes a LONG way. I'm just glad this guy lived. I've been to a couple of accidental NYE shootings in my career, and some of them were fatal.

I have a good flying buddy (couple trips to OSH as well as local flying) who flies as a C130 navigator for the Wyoming Air National Guard. He's been deployed to "the desert" many times since we became friends--I've always told him to be sure to duck. One time I asked him if their Herc had ever been shot at. "Yeah, one day we came back from a low level flight over western Nebraska and found several bullet holes."

We had a instructor get hit by a .22 in 1978 at CAP solo incampment. Kid said he was shooting birds. Small piece of duct tape on the right door and the C150 flew again the next day. Bullet stayed outside the ribcage after hitting the door handle and left a large cut up the instructors side. My buddy was the student in the left seat. Pretty exciting for a 16 yr old kid.

Re: Pilot hit by gun fire over Jacksonville, Fl.

Flying into Ft. Lauderdale, FL....

.....in a B-727. After landing the Flight Engineer did a walk around, came into the cockpit and said......"come out here captain, I've something you need to see." There on the vertical stabilizer about 2 inches from an internal main control hydrolic line was a bullet hole penetrating both sides...big enough that I could stick my thumb into it.

I grounded the aircraft and took my crew to a hotel. We were interviewed by the Boward County Sheriff's office, airport police, FBI, FAA and NTSB over the next 24 hours. Bottom line.....never knew how it got there. But I was convinced that some good ole boy cruising in his airboat out over alligator alley swamp decided to take a pot shot at us while we were low on final approach to runway 10. The bullet penetrated exactly at the line of passenger windows. 10 feet forward and we could have had a dead passenger. Two inches forward and it would have severed the hydrolic line that powered the horizontal stabilizer.

The funny part was the media's reaction. Although I sequested my crew and we never spoke to the media...the next day I turned on the local news. There was a pretty 20 something blond female reporter: standing on the ramp with wind blowing her hair.... our 727 in the background. With a serious look on her face she said....."Yesterday ### Airlines flight #### coming into Ft. Lauderdale had a near tragic experience." "On short final the crew heard a loud explosion...the captain turned to his copilot and said....we have been shot."

Pure BS. We didn't even know anything had happened until on the ground. So much for truth in reporting.
