I liked that too.

The skills you need to land a jet in busy air space at say LAX seem to be almost totally unrelated to the skills you need to land a cub on a rough mauntain side.

Not that one skill set is better than the other. They just seem about as related as driving a bus in New York is to jumping 4 wheeler in the desert.

Don't worry guys, I don't plan on applying for this job. While I would enjoy the challenge of relearning the bush style of flying there are two problems. 1. my wife would shoot me and 2. the pay cut would be too much for my mortgage. Although the life insurance would help.....

At least you'll still have a job. I just got my latest union newsletter (sheet metal workers- building trades), and it said things are looking up-- we're down to only 22% unemployment from 27% a year ago! Makes me glad I pulled the trigger on my pension starting january.

After I read this again I should have said that I am grateful to have a job right now. A good paying one I might add.

I also guess a better explanation would have been that I used to be able to work as much overtime and double-time as needed from March until Oct. I used to get the savings built up enough to where I didn't need to work much during the winter months. I still try to explain this to my boss's, because the money part of it still pretty much evens out at the end of the year. But, they didn't buy it for a dollar.

Although I've often thought about Alaska, I'm just not sure I could handle the cold. The flying does look awesome through and right up my street. Shame I don't have the hours on those types they list.

It would be a bit of a "transition", temperature-wise, from Indonesia to northern AK.....We had a young man come here to NW Minnesota to college a few years ago, from Singapore. Poor guy was wearing an arctic parka in October....early October.

Also, the cost of living index in AK can sink a good dream too. Living in the tropic takes almost no money in many places especially The Cariolina Is., and other small non-political nations.

But, AK, hold on to your hat and wallet before a long term deal is signed. The newbies are fresh meat and get bottom feeder wages (not all but, in several cases I have read ).
