Re: Piper Cherokee STOL

There are not many but like this strip, I always take some grass out of the wing tips :)
This will be a limitation of the plane, no matter how good a pilot you are.

Looks like you'll be cleaning some green stains off your wings :)

Except over tall bushes and fence posts.
An acquaintance has a Cherokee 260 and a C210. I'll try to talk him in to dumping his Centurion for a U206 so we can get some real numbers.......but, he does say that the fuel gauge goes down faster than the miles covered goes up in the Cherokee. If you can afford the extra fuel burn on your Cherokee I think you're better off from the get go. A brief look at prices on Trade-o-plane or Barnstormers indicates you'll save $30k or more for comparable times and equipment. The fuel burn cannot be that much worse.

I've always had a fondness for the cherokee.....but then again I've got a Piper belt buckle too.

Damn, I hope these Alaska air taxis catch on to that. Then maybe I could afford one of the cast-off 206's.

Re: Piper Cherokee STOL

I've flown a 260 horse PA28-235 with Comanche 260 exhaust and STOL kit,

A 260 horse PA32-260 with STOL kit and speed mods,

And Art Matson's Juliette in the Denver-Oshkosh Air Race (standing start, flying finish). Juliette is 150 hp with both speed and STOL mods. With stock 50 gallon tanks, we did 903 statute miles non-stop against an average 3 kt headwind, averaging 130 mph airspeed, landing with an hour fuel reserve remaining. Most of the trip was at 14,600 feet, and we crossed the finish line at 500' AGL doing a little over 180 mph. Very low drag for a Cherokee, with good STOL performance.

Brush clearance is the only downside to the Cherokee STOL performance.

Great airplanes, but not the only downside, have a helluva time standing under one to keep the sun off or the rain also. Another good thing is they will stay put a lot better in the wind than anything with a high wing.

They do get a bit squirrelly in directional control on soft, wet, grass surfaces, once one of the wheels cuts through into the mud underneath the grass.

To be fair, your Wilga is about the only plane you probably DON'T have trouble standing under...

Throw a hunter and a moose in it and try taking off from an 800 foot strip. Let me know how that goes...

Re: Piper Cherokee STOL

Absolutely. my Piper 28-180 has a wingtip STOL kit installed and it rules! I have landed and taken off from extremely short grass landing strips, designed for ultralight take offs/landings, without any trouble at all. I highly recommend it if you are in need of such a kit.

Re: Piper Cherokee STOL

Guess who's here ???
It's me jabr800 the guy in the video !!!

Looking around for a few more "tricks" for my 1965 Cherokee 180C that is in the video and I still own.
Would like to get the Isham 2.25' Wingtip Extensions, or maybe go hog wild with a Robertson STOL kit, which both of these items seem to be unavailable.

My desire is to takeoff even shorter now, as I just came Home from Jennings, LA and the "Swamp STOL 2021 Contest" where I took third place out of four competitors, in the Light Touring Class.

It seems that I may the only person to have ever competed in a Piper Cherokee !!!
Also I was the only low wing airplane in any class.
Sure was a fun event !!!

My icon is me touching down "on the Line" in the 3rd landing of the finals at the contest.

Here's a very long youtube video of the event.
If you observe time stamp at 12:45 for 4 minutes, and 1:13:00 for about 10 minutes, you'll see some backround on Me, The Cherokee, and some of the Contest Flying.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuzHLtV8GF0

Best Takeoff for me was 290' and best landing was about 315' or so on wet grass !!

I can be reached at [email protected] if you have any thoughts.

Take care and great to find this webpage !!!
