Currie,
I've flown a PA-14 with a 180. They are great airplanes. They are not, however, really comparable to a Super Cub in takeoff performance, for the reasons you suggest. They are also scarce as hen's teeth, hence the reason a lot of folks have gone the experimental route, building "bushmasters" or "producers", etc. using a stretched Pacer fuselage with Cub wings.
The stock flaps on a 14 are pretty small as well. Stick controls, side by side seating, but really "cozy" with two up front.
But, nice airplanes. If you can find one cheap, it'll be worth a LOT of money if cleaned up, and a big engine added, but it's going to likely take a lot of work.
The fuselages were largely mild steel tubing as well, like the other Piper T/W airplanes. These are all old (1947 or so) and corrosion in those aft tubes is often an issue. Get someone reallys smart to look at one if you're considering it and bring bags of cash.
