At one pint in my career, I operated an amphib Beaver for work. This was on Kodiak Island, with a few excursions to the AK Peninsula. That airplane was a workhorse.
And, this was before all the GW mods came out for the Beaver.

So, our aircraft management (idiots) decided they wanted to be rid of all the “old, high maintenance” equipment. Mind you, that Beaver almost never needed much in the way of maintenance……but “old” airplanes……so gauche!

My boss was totally on board with them….he was also an idiot, BTW.

So, one day I flew that beautiful old Beaver to Anchorage, said goodbye and flew a brand new amphib 206 back home.

I had cautioned my boss that a 206 would require two trips to do the same work the Beaver dis with one. I was wrong…..it was more like three trips to do the same loads.

And, that 206 was NOT built to operate in salt water. Nuff said on that.

Finally, for the OP: What exactly do you mean by “off airport” Ops in your first post? Are you actually saying you want to land either of these big planes off airport in lower 48? Or is Johnson Creek “off airport” in your perspective? I’m not being smart ass here, just trying to better understand your ACTUAL mission.

The loads you described are BIG loads, and you MAY be able to find a 206 that’ll carry that, but you’re going to have to leave a lot of fuel at home, thus lots of stops, and no fuel to play once you’re in the back country.

IF you’re actually thinking of “backcountry airstrips” when you posted “off airport”, I’d seriously consider an early short Caravan, with the engine upgrade. Or maybe a Grand Caravan if you can find the right deal.

Buy one of those in good shape, and you’ll have a load hauling, ass kicking machine that can carry the loads you describe AND get there fast. AND, your pax will thank you….if you’ve ever had to sit in third row of a 206…..it sucks, big time.

Always fun to spend other people’s money.

Thanks MTV, I always enjoy reading your thoughts throughout the forum! When I say off airport I'm referring to gravel bars, non maintained areas, etc. Don't get me wrong, Johnson Creek and other backcountry strips are awesome and fun to visit as well. I appreciate your insight

Thanks for clarifying. So, here’s the bad news: A big airplane stuck is orders of magnitude harder to unstick than a smaller airplane. The Beaver is as good as they come on a gravel bar, but if it gets stuck…….

But, if you define your loads as in your first post, something Beaver sized or bigger is what you’re looking at, I think. That’s just a very big order.

The 206 works fine on appropriate gravel bars, and I’ve done some of that. But I don’t think it’ll carry the load AND enough gas to be practical.

I’ve never heard of folks doing much off airport stuff with the Caravan, but the short Caravan with the Grand engine is a pretty capable plane.

Good luck.

Absolute POS, and company is out of business. Look for parts support? Good luck.
OH, yeah, and less useful load than a good U-206G

MTV
FWIW, pacific aerospace took the production over and is building them new again. So there is some support.

Wow, I hadn’t heard that. Last I heard they sold off everything to different buyers.

Too bad. Those things won’t carry any more (or as much) as a 185.

Cherokee Six = LoserVille. 206 not too far behind. If I’m spending your money, Beaver all the way.

I settled for a C185, but I really wanted a DHC-2.

I’ll get a Beaver someday.

Re: Please talk some sense into me

Why do people always recommend homebuilts with one flying example in these threads?

Re-reading the OP, your 90% is readily met with a Staggerwing, Cessna 195, Howard, or Stinson Gullwing, all of which have as much ramp presence as a Beaver, many at half the price. They’d also do 90% of your remaining 10% — all but the gravel bars.

Please take this last bit in the non-judgmental spirit in which I intend it: someone who posts the question “should I get a Beaver or a 206” is several years away from being the kind of guy who lands a $500,000 Beaver on gravel bars. It’s sort of like when I bought a BMW R1200GS thinking I was going to ride it off road. I learned better before breaking anything.

If you have that kind of money available, maybe you should look at a 180/185/206 for your 90% and get a Supercub/PA-12/RANS/Kitfox to practice the off-airport stuff and see if it’s really your cup of tea.

Re: Please talk some sense into me

I do love the Beaver, and I'd own one if I were more central to the areas I want to fly, but the more I look at your original post the more I think you should stick with a Skywagon or your current 182. Either will cover your 90% mission with ease. For your 10% mission what I do here in BC is tell my buddies to take a truck and a slip tank of Avgas up to a spot fairly near our remote destination and I ferry everyone in from there. I've got to say when I'm providing the plane nobody has ever turned this deal down and it's a hell of a lot simpler than running a Beaver for all my flying.

I thought the correct answer to every “which plane?” inquiry was a Bonanza…. Oh Sorry that is the Pilots of America forum :)

Beechtalk

I’d love to own and fly a Beaver. I fly a Skywagon. 100 kt/20 gallon vs 125 kt/16 gallon. I get 8 nm/gal. Beaver gets 5.

My cross country trips are long enough that I’d be 2 days in a Beaver. In the 185 it’s a day. A beaver is glorious. A 185 is a bit less glorious but I’m seldom more than 2 people.

Mike, Getting in and out of https://www.northwestbackcountryaircraf ... mid=624961 is way easier than the 185! I REALLY liked the 4 doors, the view, the airplane width and when traveling any distance rolling a sleeping bag out in the back was easy.

I miss watching the world go by from the Found.

What, no love for a PC-6/340 or /350?

Are they even any left, or have they all been converted to turbine power by now?

Damn...no love for the 207. I have a lot of time in both the Beaver and the 206. Given your OP I would say the U206 with flint tanks will do the job. That big door helps a lot loading stuff. I gonna catch hell here, but I will take a 206 into pretty much anything a 185 will go, and much prefer them on the beaches, especially with a steep beach and an off shore wind blowing.

The beaver is cool, however, it was designed to haul loads for shorter trips. You get in a beaver for long trips and it is....tiring. after doing a 7 hour day in a Beaver I am freaking exhausted. The vibration and low frequency noise just gets to you. Also when you get into a headwind you will be looking at the same dm tree for twenty minutes.

My $0.02

Agreed on most all counts. That is a big load to ask of a 206. A 550 equipped 206, with the Wip mods…..maybe. But unless at least two of those passengers are tiny……those back seats suck, and egress really sucks in an emergency.

But, yeah, I remember those long days in a Beaver, wearing ear plugs AND headset.

Now, a DHC-2 Mk III Beaver: Quiet, tons of power, and speed…..what’s not to like. Oh, yeah, they actually climb, even with a load.

Always fun to spend others $$.

This is the very first thing I will be purchasing right after I win the lottery but I'm also an unashamed Canadian.

Re: Please talk some sense into me

Tx,

Kodiak all the way will fit all of your needs wishes and wants. Great plane, great performance, great company and support.

Look up Mark Brown on Google. He is the Daher demo pilot. He will give you the straight skinny on a Kodiak.

If a Beaver is on your initial list I think a Kodiak is within your budget but that is up to you. Go fly a 206/208/185/Kodiak and make a determination based on what you like not “our” internet opinions.

Regards

Really? Couldn't I buy three Beavers for the price of a Daher Kodiak? Or am I missing something? (serious question)

Nope, you could buy five or six piston Beavers for the price of a Kodiak.
