Re: Pondering Wheel Bearings

May be unusual, but we get a very good life from wheel bearings. My shop looks after around 100 aircraft, and we may only change out 2 or 3 sets a year. Only exceptions are the tailwheel bearings on the ag planes, but that's a combination of corrosive lime, superphosphate and pressure washing the wheels... I only use Mobil SHC100 grease, seems it's good stuff!

Re: Pondering Wheel Bearings

Aerocet somewhat recently has been using a modern oil bath bearing in their amphibious floats, I wonder how those are holding up?

Do wheels in the experimental world use these old fashioned bearings as well?

I’ve thrown out many a set of wheel bearings over the years, seemingly too early. It would be great to figure out a better alternative.

Re: Pondering Wheel Bearings

"another magneto argument with the FAA"

That is essentially what it becomes for a certified bird. ANY part you change has to go through the certification process that cripples all but the deepest pockets. Once you count the cost, you realize its unrecoverable and most businesses can't afford to operate like charities.

Just look at the fortune that has been spent just trying to get TEL out of avgas.

The process needs to change, or at least catch up to the technology that is available.

Re: Pondering Wheel Bearings

Wheel bearings are a standard part.
Why not call up Timken and find out what is the direct replacement bearing that is sealed?
As long as it has the same specifications and is just an improved seal - who gives a shit?

Re: Pondering Wheel Bearings

Bagarre, that is a good idea. Better wheel bearings and don't have to go to electronic ignition.
