Re: Project: Cessna 170B

We'll I'm back from my trip and can finally spend some time in the hangar again. I was able to get the bottom of the right wing (minus flaps and ailerons) completely stripped, it took about 10 hours. Time for a beer.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

I did both struts a while ago, there's still a small amount to clean up around the tops, hard to get in there.

Did you uncover the big N# on the left wing?

I haven't touched the left wing yet. If you look closely you can see the old Canadian registration below the paint on the left wing. There used to be 12" N numbers on the side of the fuselage at one point. It looks like they were placed right over the original scheme.

I started on the left wing today. It's kinda cool uncovering the N numbers that have been there for the last 61 years.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

Hey Rob
I ended up at 1400lbs. Interior done light wt,, light wt. panel done, 180 gear, double puck brakes, 26's, x/baggage, baggage door, new Top Prop, which was a little heavier(10 lbs I think, longer blades and a dampener). Useable fuel drained, oil in the engine. Most unnecessary stuff stripped off including paint from the fuselage. I was hoping for less and will get it weighed on another set of scales, but that's what it showed the other day.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

Gary, I believe the 170B should be weighed with oil drained and add 30lbs unusable fuel. I've read it before somewhere, maybe the TCDS?

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

IIRC I weighed mine full of fuel because it's an easier known qty than draining. Just subtract full fuel.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

Zzz Did they subtract 2.5 gal because the caps are on the inboard end of the tanks and a b has dihedral unlike the A that the tanks were designed for?
Just curoious I'm told that's as close as you can get em to full on level ground, can't remember if that is per side or both.

Anyone who believes that all aircraft fuel tanks are identical is apt to wind up with false E/W.

I've seen fairly significant differences in tank capacity in several aircraft types.

BUT, Gary, bear in mind that "Useable Fuel" implies that fuel which the airplane can use in "normal flight". In fact, the new rules require quite a bit more fuel than the old rules, due to requirements to feed fuel in a variety of "flight attitudes". Just because you can drain it out while the plane is sitting in a hangar doesn't necessarily imply that the engine can access that fuel in flight, as in a descent for example.

An example of the new cert rule is the CC Top Cub, which has SIX gallons unuseable fuel, according to CC and their POH.

Nevertheless, after seeing similar airplanes with very different tank capacities, I would always insist on weighing with fuel drained.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

I agree with what MTV said. I'll be draining all the fuel out so I can get as accurate of a W&B as I can.
