Re: Project: Cessna 170B BACK IN THE AIR!!!

In anticipation for the High Sierra Fly-in I put my 26" bushwheels back on the 170. I took it for a flight and I forgot how much I LOVE having them. It really is amazing how much they smooth out landing on rough surfaces. Not to mention they look good doing it! 8)

Re: Project: Cessna 170B BACK IN THE AIR!!!

I've had the idea of getting a cargo net for the extended baggage area for a long time now. I always planned on getting a custom one made from mountainwave aviation but I wasn't quite sure how I would mount it. Looking at the bulkhead at the forward edge of the extended baggage I noticed there was 4 pre existing holes that were in the perfect location for mounting some tiedown rings. I also stumbled upon a website that sells nets in various sizes for off road vehicles. http://www.safaristraps.com. I decided what the hell and ordered their 23.5"x23.5" net that has metal rings on each corner and 48"straps with cam buckles to secure it to whatever you want. I got it in the mail today and went out to the hangar to see how it fits in the plane. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I can use it as a barrier net in front of the extended baggage area, or to secure cargo to the floor and pull it tight using the straps on each corner. Not bad for $55.

I just read all 27 pages of this thread. That is some amazing work.

You should be real proud of the end product. Looks fantastic. I especially like the polished aluminum and stipe work!

Re: Project: Cessna 170B BACK IN THE AIR!!!

Rob,

What kind of tie down ring or attachment point did you install in the back corners of your extended baggage kit on the floor? It kind of looks like a flush-mount ring of some sort. I like the look!

I installed some base plates with stiffeners on the back side that accept Ancra tie down rings. These are the same type of rings that are used in the Atlee Dodge seat tracks for seat belt attachment. You can buy them from Atlee Dodge on the above links, or search online for a better deal as I did. I bought a kit on eBay that had 2 tiedown rings, 2 base plates, and 2 backing plates for $22. Get some MS24694 screws with nuts for the install.
