Re: Project: Cessna 170B

I got them them through the local FBO at PASX which is M.A.R.C. They got them from Seaplanes North at a better price than I could. I try and get as much stuff from M.A.R.C. as possible. They are a non-profit missionary based FBO and lots of times their prices can beat or match the usual suspects.

Rob, your plane is looking great! So much work - but so worth it.

Rob,

Flew into Rio Vista today. Saw your plane shimmering in the light from the run up area. Keep up the good work!

I was the silver cessna 140 you took a couple second break to look at.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

I was out fiddling around at the hangar tonight test fitting some things in the panel. I still have another hole to cut and get it painted but I think it's going to turn out pretty nice.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

Rob it's looking great.

I downloaded Foreflight 6 last night and was thinking about your panel and how I might change mine. With the split screen attitude indicator on Foreflight 6 and a Stratus AHRS you will likely have a better inadvertent IFR panel then the old venturi driven gyros. Although not legal for IFR I bet it would be a better platform. I am contemplating ripping out my gyros and doing something similar. The reality is I will never put the money into my plane to make it a useable IFR flyer. Poor mans glass is getting better everyday!

It works in the vertical position too.

Cant wait to see the finished project.

Yes it's the iPad Mini with Foreflight mounted in an AirGizmos panel dock. I was thinking about getting a 796 but I couldn't justify spending 4 times as much. Plus I still have the 496 mounted in the lower left. I think between the 2 of them I should be able to figure out where I'm going.

I hear you on that one. I've flown with some friends that have a 796 and that thing is really cool. I just got the new Foreflight on my wife's full-sized iPad last month to try it out and it's pretty capable as well...

Good thing I have another year before I'll need to make a decision!

Your panel looks great!

Just don't forget to look out the window! Seriously, it looks like a really capable, user-friendly way to go. Nice job!

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

I got my new lightly tinted windshield from LP Aero today. This one will still require the center strap, but I can live with that because it's 4lbs lighter. During this test fit it appears I won't have to do any trimming which is nice.

The protective film is still on in this picture

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

Rob, that looks righteous! Just out of curiosity, have you thought about bubble windows for the sides?

+1 on bubbles! I had 4" in my 170 and put them in again in my Skywagon.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

I thought about them but it's kinda late now, well not really unless I want to spend more money :D . I already bought flat lightly tinted windows from Great Lakes Aero. I think the bubble windows look cool but I'm not sure how functional they would be, my head sits too high too look out them while flying. Maybe it would be a good armrest and that's about it. I also like being able to open my window in flight and let it rise to the bottom of the wing with the airflow. I have a quick release pin on the hinge on the window hinge for that. I'd be afraid to do that with the bubble windows. Also, I don't want to make my 170 slower than it already is, even if it's only negligible.
