Here is a late congratulations Matt! I once owned a 1955 C-180 that was all stock, and it was still a fine performer.
Enjoy and keep taking pictures. John

While I'm very content with my C181, there is something about a Stinson...

I agree 100% with you Terry (although the Stinson in the pic was very deceiving). Perhaps it's the nostalgia that flying a 65 year old plane brings, or the great lines and interior, or maybe it's the stout and forgiving gear that makes every landing enjoyable. There is indeed something about a Stinson...

Tadpole: Congrats on making headway on the old girl. I need to come down there and check things out (and give you a ride).

HiC: Let's get a breakfast run in the works. Perhaps a brunch at GXY, APA, BJC, etc for a winter BCP meet and greet.

Congrats, Matt. Hope to see the bird at JC. She looks great.

Good thing is you can also spill mustard from your hot dogs on the interior, and no one would be the wiser. Blend right in.

Bring it up so we can start working on getting approval for my pod on it!

Keep me in the loop on that breakfast idea. I'll be around a bunch next month. I'm taking January off from the airline to finish the 170. Fly that thing up so I can check it out.

Sounds like a CO meet and greet is in order. I'll start a new thread on it and see what everyone has in mind.

Made some small steps forward with the 180. Back seat out, Garmin 396 in (ram mount and 3M sticky pad), and a set of Lightspeed Zulu's were added to the headset mix (thanks flightlogic!).

Matt, I pulled out the ash tray, yanked the front off. A few rivets and some ingenuity and the Garmin 496 sits in what was wasted space. Used the actual Garmin snap in plastic mount. Cords go back through the hole. Actual tray still slides in and out for adjustment.
Also, write up a W&B sheet for back seat out. Helps if you get ramp checked.
Glad you like Zulus.

The current 396 location is just a quick temp solution. When I get the money saved up, I would like to redo the entire panel. At that point I will install an AirGizmo's panel mount where the huge attitude indicator is. This location works, but it does take about 10 min to lock onto satellites.

W&B completed. ;)

My wife tested out the Zulu's yesterday and gave me a BIG thumbs up. 8)

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

I've been flying a little each week. My landings are improving, but if anyone has any tips on 180 anti-bounce landing techniques, I'd be grateful.

A few weeks ago, Katie and I went to Hooper for some mountain flying and good food. It did really well in the mountains and Katie loved the extra BTU's of the cabin heat.

Other than putting gas in the tanks, I've fiddled around with a new tailwheel tube and tire, a new wing sump drain, cleaning out more dirt and grim, and an oil change.

I made a call to Alaskan Bushwheel today, so in the near future I see a few good mods getting installed. 8)

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

Hi Matt,
Have someone video you landing to see if your getting the tailwheel down at the same time or before the mains. If not, have Katie ride in the back seat. Not saying she weighs much #-o but the weight shift may help you to not hit the mains before the tailwheel, assuming your trying to nail the full stall landing.
Oh crap, those new tires aren't going to help.
But otherwise, cool ride. I'm excited for you.
See you this summer.

What tires do you currently have that you're taking off?

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

Matt,

Nice looking machine. Congrats!

First mod I did to my old 180 and current 170 was a steps and handles kit. Not monstrously expensive, and not that bad to install, but makes preflighting a LOT easier if you're not 7 feet tall, and fueling in places that don't offer a handy step ladder.

I think the most common mistake many folks make landing these things initially is they try to land too fast. Slow down, try tail low wheel landings using a touch of power and hold it off till nice and slow.
Same for three pt....let it slow down prior to touch. Bounces come from energy...vertical or fwd.....

Nice machine!

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

I would concur with what MTV said on two things.

Call Atlee Dodge and get the step and handle kit. When you get those BW's on that spinner will be well over your head and your plane will look like a monster...

Landing, what speed are you carrying at touch down? No STOL kit on that correct? Try touch down around 50 or a tad slower. I bet your just to fast. I find myself working the throttle a bit always for a spot landing. You will get it. Your a good pilot.

Anxious to see that bird transform!

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

Hi Matt, I don't have any experience in a 180. But 90% of my time is in Cessna taildraggers with the spring gear(120 & 170). Try landing one wheel just before the other and it will get rid of any bounce, also pushing the yoke forward when the wheels touch will help (for wheel landings anyways).

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

MTV hit it. ENERGY. If you get used to ridding yourself of extra energy... everything is better. Except in bed.
Touch down slower. Pin the wheels on, if you are not already. Hard to do at first... just like pushing hard when the engine quits. Gotta learn to do it. The slow landings will pay off for short areas too... as a matter of habit.
One goofy trick I do at Prescott is pick a sliver of the runway way over to one side. I land just near the edge of the asphalt. You can visually simulate a small, narrow strip this way. All the CFI's cringe... since they want you on the stripes in the center. Give yourself a visual goal in length too. Using the markings or just bushes. Tower thinks I am probably dislexic or something... but it is good training every touchdown. Have fun...

Re: Project Retro Wagon - 180A

If it's any help Matt I mostly did full stall, 3 point landings with my old C-170 because of the spring gear. If you want a good 2 point landing you're gonna have to nail that airspeed and vertical speed. Practice, practice, prcatice!! :) I've watched a lot of your landings with the old Stinson and it's gear was a lot more forgiving.
