Propeller or engine problem?
Lycoming, Continental, Hartzell, McCauley, or any broad spectrum drive system component used on multiple type.
Advice requested. We have a182P with a PPonked O-470R, with a Hartzell PHC-G3YF-1RF/F8068 prop. An instructor who just flew the plane noted a 1/8” “longitudinal play in the prop” . Is this normal?
I have never noticed any play. The maintenance manual doesn’t mention any play but it isn’t specific for this prop. I queried and yes, longitudinal in this case means pushing or pulling at the hub and the assembly moving in relation to the engine.
No big deal or ground and call the mechanic? Out of caution I have done the latter but am looking for opinions on what could be the issue. Loose bolts come to mind.

Is it crankshaft end play, rather than the propeller? Continental has a service bulletin about this that might apply to your O470:

Thank you. That reference is very helpful. I talked to the mechanic and he said he thinks it is normal but will check it.
Now just for completeness, the SB referees to a “Table of Limits 72-30-17”. Google does not come up with anything on that and the maintenance manual doesn’t have it. It must be in TCM publication?

Another thing to think about---did that instructor put a dial indicator on or was he just guessing. I haven't yanked on my crank for awhile but there is definitely some end play. But it has been apart and put back together 3 times since I owned it and is fine.

Probably play between the prop blade and its hub. I don't know your particular prop, but some have more play than others, and is likely normal. Hartzell or a prop shop should be able to tell you limits.... There is a difference between "new/ overhauled" and "servicable" limits. My experience with prop shops is they only tell you "new" and want to make it so.

The center column of Table 2 in the SB shows what TCM maintenance/overhaul manual contains that section "Table of Limits". For O470 or IO470, it's X30586.
