Re: Question About Gross Weight and Flaps...

What has made Cessnas popular with so many is that you can go reasonably fast with no flaps and really slow with 40 degrees of flaps. Not using full flaps, especially with a load, is misusing by not using good technology.

Read your (STC) paperwork.
If it says 2500, but doesn't mention a flap restriction,
you'll have answered your question.
If there is a flap restriction, say limiting to 30 even though there are 40 available,
there should be a placard on the panel and/or flap handle,
plus an addition to the Approved Flight Manual (aka operating limitations).

Re: Question About Gross Weight and Flaps...

I think your STC doesn't have the 30 degree flap restriction because it was certified before Cessna made the 172P and Q available with the higher gross weights and the max flap of 10 degrees for takeoff and 30 degrees for landing. The later 180 hp conversions are just an STC'd version of the 172Q which came from the factory with the 180 hp O360 and used their similarity to the 172Q as the basis for approval. If I remember correctly, and I am probable wrong but the 152 is also limited to a max of 30 degrees. of flap for landing. About this time there were a few legal cases which Cessna lost involving an attempted go around in a Cessna 150 with 40 degrees of flaps selected that involved fatalities. I'm sure that Cessna's legal department decided that it was in their best interest to protect everyone from the risk of a flap 40 go around than fight the law suit brought by the heirs of pilots or passenger(s) of pilots who failed to follow recommended procedures. Like I said, just speculation on my part and probably wrong.

That makes sense. The STC was done prior to the 172Q.
