AH-1F and UH-1, but too young for Vietnam.
Trim is a transient condition.

My hat's off to all of you military guys, both former and active. Your stories about dodging (and sometimes not dodging) bullets make all our civilian flight stories seem ridiculously tame by comparison. Words are insufficient to express how much many of us out here appreciate all you have given to our country. Drinks are on me if I'm ever lucky enough to share a campfire with you.

Out of trim. That's also how you dogleg rockets into nearly abeam targets you have gotten too close to. Don't cover friendlies with that shot, however.

Hahaha, also true. A literal meaning to the phrase "slinging rockets!"

Keep the shiney side up and the dirty side down...

I want to thank you for your service!
A very good friend of mine has spent most of his career in Special Operation as an HH-53 Pave-Low driver. I can try and give him a call this weekend and see what he has to say. My guess though would be an add on to what Mr. Bill R. said....in SE Asia they had a lot of vegetation that enabled them to 'hide' until they were nearly on top of their LZ. Whereas in the sandbox it is just that, a sandbox with nothing to shield your approach. A close and slow moving object is easier to hit with ground fire than one that is several thousand meters away. Just conjecture, but an RPG is a short range weapon that is readily available to insurgents and they can wreak havoc on a whirly bird. My thinking is distance is your friend.

Keith,
I doubt I would have had any overlap since I was towards the end of the Pave Low's life, but was just curious who you knew. I drove 53's for an assignment until they were retired. It was a small community, so good chance I've at least heard of him.

I dam sure would have GB but it wasn't my day to fly

Sometimes the recovery on the destroyer was as scary as the rescue

Here is a video of a similar operation but a different time and ship but the same problem. He had a bigger deck then we did. Three foot clearance with rotor blades and missile launcher

Screw that noise - glad I'm not deck qual'd. I'd love to hear some of your stories though, I bet they're crazy!
