We haven’t exaclty tackled that yet. The back side of the panel that it’s mounted to had a plate that dynon sent in the kit. That part is pretty solid. We will be adding an additional double around the hole and possibly tying into an adjacent rib. We put that off for now while I ponder our options. If you get there before we do, send some pictures!

Re: Rans S-21 build!

Will do - yeah I have the mount - but it's build for a Van's wing and that DOES get supported by a rib... That is exactly what I am pondering as well as the pitot and mount has a lot of weight for such thin skins - I am likely to construct a bracket attached to the doubler and then a rib... BUT the ribs aren't super strong in that axis either...

Maybe a doubler that runs the full width between two ribs and ties into both of them?

Re: Rans S-21 build!

Jase and Jered, watching intently and also interested in the Dynon pilot installation. I’m still working the top skin, but see this on the horizon.

Thanks for sharing Jered. Loving the progress and your son’s involvement. My 13-year old is loving the S-20.5 build.

I was thinking that same thing! That would be amazing in my straight tail 172!

Slightly off topic, but I'm pretty sure Stoots does offer the IO370 STC for the 170,172 and 175.

EDIT: Aaaand if I'd read further down, I would've seen MTV's post saying the same thing! Haha whoops.

Lots of progress being made on the Outbound! Rudder cables and pulley installed in the tail section, rear baggage floor complete, top skins being fit! Hopefully these pictures will someone in the future!

Re: Rans S-21 build!

Looking at all that slippery aluminum in the baggage bay, I'd use DashMat auto carpet back there if it was mine. https://www.covercraft.com/us/en/dash-c ... cEQAvD_BwE Invented by a former Air Force type no less! You can buy it in a bulk roll, and it's cheap.

It weighs nothing, super light anyway, and as I accidentally found out, just happens to be the LOOP to Velcro's HOOK. So, anything you put the hook side of Velcro too, would stick anywhere back there. This, would a little thought, can be a handy little trick. Back when I flew with a whiz wheel (pre GPS) I had DashMat on my panel deck, and hook velcro on the back of the WW, you could just toss it anywhere and it'd stick, pretty handy. Put hook Velcro pants on the kids and they won't need seat belts

Thanks for the tip! Sounds like a great idea. The baggage floor is screwed down and the side panels and floor will be removed and upholstered in some fashion before final assembly.

Re: Rans S-21 build!

Jared, did you see the SCS carpet thread? I got a sample for doing the interior of my Rebel. The sample piece is super light weight.

I did see that thread, thanks. We may try to match the seats from Rans so I’m not sure what route we’ll go yet.

Re: Rans S-21 build!

It sure feels good having this part of the build over with! The fit and installation of the top skins proved to be the hardest part so far but I’m super happy with the finished product. Should be on its’s gear soon!

Not a whole lot to report in the last few weeks. Got the fuselage on a rotisserie, side and bottom skins fit, and our finishing kit arrived. More to come soon hopefully. Really hoping to start our paint booth build and be spraying paint by early summer.

Re: Rans S-21 build!

This is my first post on this board. I joined primarily to thank you for posting your build. I have been watching the development of the S-21 since Oshkosh 2017 with the intent of building one if it will work well on amphibious floats. While I am waiting for courageous souls like you to work the bugs out of the kit, I've been trying to figure out how floats would work out. I'm looking at Zenair 2200 amphibious floats which weigh 330 lbs/pair. Add rigging and water rudders to that for another estimated 50 lbs and the useful load is down to 435 lbs plus what ever weight was gained by removing the original gear/tires/brakes. Since I don't even have a good guess as the weight of these, I would really appreciate it if could weigh them for me before you install them.

Re: Rans S-21 build!

The thing I’d be concerned about with the S21 on floats is performance as well as useful load. This airplane doesn’t have much wing for a seaplane, and seaplanes love lots of wing.
