Replace Garmin 696 in Husky
Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?
696 is mounted in Husky custom metal panel and screen is dead- no Garmin support anymore. Replacement suggestions; not IFR and not high end? EI CGR 30P eng monitor and Garmin 39 & 82 ADS-B IN/OUT. 696 wasn't talking to anything else; trying to keep it simple-like me.
Thanks for any opinions/suggestions.

I have had a Garmin 796 since they came out on the market. It is in my Cub with a panel mount. I have a new to me ‘56 182 and I put a new 760 on the yoke. It is basically an upgraded 796.
If the 796 fails I will replace it with a 760. I believe they have a panel mount for it now. I know the 796 mount won’t work.
The major difference in operating the 760 will be more touch, less buttons than the 696.

The 796 and 760 are so much better than the 696 because of the touchscreen. Depending on the modification you'd need to make to the custom cutout, I'd replace with one of those.

I agree. I prefer the 796 to the 760 soley based on the fact that I can change the buttons on the home screen to what I want them to be. I'm really disappointed Garmin took that feature away on the 760. Also don't like that you have to get a different unit to have XM radio even though it's the same price as a 796.

I've got the 796 in my Husky. To tell you the truth, an iPad mini+Foreflight with ads-b is much better.

The display on the new, big iPhone is almost as big as a 760, if you’re considering that kind of thing. Not sure I’d be happy with the sunlight readability of it as a sole gps display, though.

I was an early adopter of ipad and foreflight in 2011. It was good (obviously; it's hugely popular) but I still always felt more comfortable with a purpose built unit like a Garmin portable. Especially when they're connected to ship power and not removed frequently. You can always rely on them. It seemed like my iPad was always dead battery, software updates barking at me, or something. Do-it-all mobile devices are great but I like relegating a single device to the task. Phone or iPad secondary.

You can do the same thing with an Ipad… Treat it as a dedicated avionics device, connect it to ships power via USB, don’t install anything other then your aviation apps. The upside of updates is rapid feature releases - I’d take that over a portable Garmin device any day.

Thanks all. I agree Z, got a new mini ipad and Ram mount for moving it out of the way; but, still prefer factory ship powered unit as primary. Therefore, as I suck at all things elect; buying a used 696 so no new connectors, cables or brackets (R&R). Even I can do that. I understand, used elect stuff you pay your money and take your chances.
Thanks again,
Jack

I think for the price consious amoung us the "previously love" avionics market presents a reasonable option. There's often some nice gear to be sourced that way.
