Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Rezrider's going to fly south, an aerial expedition.

Without too much fanfar I thought I should mention that we have embarked on a little trip! We loaded up the M-5 and pointed it south.
Stopped in to see Skalywag on the way through Texas and had a great time checking out the area.
We are currently in Oaxaca Mexico for two weeks of language school. After that, we plan to fly as far south as we can get, Patagonia perhaps!

Follow along on our blog at: http://www.emcincofliessouth.com and if you are on instagram, then: @emcinco. You can see our tracker on the blog site and I'll try to keep you updated here from time to time.

This trip has been years in the making. If all goes well then we'll be gone for 6 months or so.
Wish us luck!
Rezrider, right seater and Emcinco.

Re: Rezrider's gone south

Wow, that sounds like a fantastic adventure!!!

Thanks for letting us all follow along on your journey. I frequently travel in Latin America so understand the unique challenges and amazing opportunities a trip like that presents.

I suspect you'll have a blast making a journey like that!

As a side bar, Rob and I with the wife's stepped out of Fast Eddies in Tok, AK in June. There was a VW van in the parking lot with Chile plates. It looked to be a family traveling adventure. They said they had been on the road for 4-years  .

Rezrider's gone south

Heart skipped a beat... You know how people post "Zzz's gone west" when they fly into the next dimension? Well that's what registered first.

Whew. Glad you're having fun. :)

This sounds like an amazing adventure! In college I took a bus from Deming, NM to Guatemala City- so you are basically following in my footsteps haha! Here's to a wonderful and safe trip!!

I've done some wandering in Latin America too. Always an adventure.

I'll be watching this thread with interest. I'm sure you'll get into some places that are well off the beaten track.

Thanks for the title change;-)

Re: Rezrider's going to fly south, an aerial expedition.

Happy trails to Rezrider & crew! We'll be flying along with you vicariously. Thanks for making the extra effort to share your journey. It takes a lot of time to maintain a blog while immersed in an adventure as big as this one. Kudos to you for taking the time to polish up on your Spanish before getting too far south. Although you can get by without speaking the language, having some conversational proficiency will make your trip so much smoother. It will also help you make connections that would otherwise be impossible. We're hoping you make it all the way to Patagonia so you can compare the present day landscape to the physical and metaphorical ones Chatwin wrote about.

Watched your route planning video. Very cool, but I didn't see where the trip will actually end. Port Townsend perhaps?

Sounds like you are going to have a great adventure. I live in Guatemala,If you are coming here, do not hesitate to get in touch with me ([email protected]). We have the best GA maintenance in the área. Mexico,Salvador, and Honduas have pretty much killed off GA.

Re: Rezrider's going to fly south, an aerial expedition.

A quick update from the air. We're still going! In Panama right now having flown about 2,500 NM. It's hot, it's humid but it's also fantastic.
Some details of the trip so far:
-after a break from flying it feels good to be back in the saddle.
-we exit Mexico and overfly Guatemala enroute to San Salvador. The overflight permit is easy to get for Guatemala but not so easy for Nicaragua.
-the traffic in San Salvador is incredible, an impressive display of patience and aggression both at the same time!
-we met some very friendly folks at the aero club at Ilopongo.
-Costa Rica has been amazing too, very green and lush. We land at a couple of strips down the Pacific side. Hop over to a grass strip in the mountains. Then head out to the Caribbean coast where are paid a 'visit' by the CR coast guard.
-The goodness continues in Panama where the Bocas del Toro airport shares some space with the local soccer field. A great view of the canal from the air enroute to the San Blas islands which are worthy of a seperate chapter.
-Colombia is next, still waiting on the permit from them.

Please check out the blog for updates and follow the tracker there too.

Re: Rezrider's going to fly south, an aerial expedition.

Rezrider, thanks for the update. Glad you got to El Porvenir.
Slowflyer on the Maulre forum is in Panama with a Maule we delivered there, an MXT7-180A
When you fly on to Columbia if over the Darien, look down and consider, I and Gf rode horses from Panama to Columbia, swimming rivers and cutting trail many years ago. There are a few jungle airstrips on the way. We ended up at Rancho Sautata on the Rio Atrato near Turbo.
