Roadtrip to Portland - Advice and meet some BCP members?

Hello All,

My wife and I will be starting a road trip from Los Angles to Portland and back starting 06/25 through 07/16. I can have a few "days off" sort to speak to do airplane stuff or whatever. I had reached out to Tyler AKA Chosstronuat as he told me that if I am ever in Bend bring my climbing gear and lets climb, but I am so sad and shaken up to find out today of the accident. He had sent me some great videos he took using my mount of him flying his Savannah and I was so hoping to meet him one day.

We plan to stop by Lassen Volcanic park for 3 days, then Grants pass to visit a family member. Then on to Glide for some camping. then to Bend for 3 days, then to Portland and on the return trip take the coastal route down. We will be in Bend 07/01 to 07/03. Portland 07/04 to 07/09. I would love to meet up with some BCP members and possibly go for a flight or even just meet for lunch. Living in Los Angeles, I have yet to have a backcounty experience and would jump at the chance if offered. I can pay my share or trade one of my camera mounts or both. If anyone will be available to meet up somewhere along my route do let me know; even if just for lunch as it would be great to meet people.

Also we dont really know much about the Oregon coast. We plan to take 2 to 3 days to drive from Portland back to Grants pass and would love any advice on towns worth stopping to see and stay. Also any sites along the way worth putting on the list.

I am open to any and all suggestions.

Take care,

Marc Webster

Hi Marc, I'm in Sunriver (15 miles south of Bend) and would be happy to take you and your wife for a flight around the area if I'm around. My family and I might be headed to WA that weekend, but plans are up in the air at the moment-no pun intended.

I'm south of Portland about 20 miles. Always looking for a reason to fire up the BBQ

Hello Kelly,

Thanks for the reply and offer for a flight if your in town. That would be awesome. I figured many would be out of town with the holiday, but should you remain in town do let me know via email. Our accommodations in Bend are pretty scary but at least we were able to cook something on a busy weekend.

Take care,

Marc

Highroad,

We were actually looking for places to stay in Bandon last night. Our coast portion is the least sorted out. Maybe you can help with some recommendations. We were considering staying at wild spring guest habitat in Port Orford, but the price is crazy expensive. Can you recommend something similar in the area. since its our wedding anniversary we plan to stay somewhere two nights and would like it to be unique. We want to be somewhere south of Coos bay July 11th - 13th. We need to be on the southern part of the coast because it leaves us 2 more days to get home to Los Angeles from there. Also we are looking for some recomendations of other places to stay and visit as we drive down the coast from Portland. I am open to any suggestions.

If we end up anywhere near Bandon perhaps we can meet for lunch one afternoon.

Take care,

Marc

Gold Beach is hard to beat. And if there, make sure you spend part of the day doing a Rogue River jetboat ride.

As Gump said, a jet boat trip up the Rogue is a a great way to spend a day. You wouldn't think that a "tourist ride" up the Rogue would be that exciting, but there is something about twin big block chevy's and whitewater.....they give a good ride and the scenery is second to none. http://www.roguejets.com/?gclid=CjwKEAj ... oC0uPw_wcB

Lodging options: Lots of great motels in Bandon, or we really enjoy the Floras Lake area, just north of Port Orford, south of Bandon: http://floraslake.com/

Great spot to stay on the Rogue River: http://tututun.com/

If you guys Golf, you cant beat Bandon Dunes: http://bandondunesgolf.com/ Golf, food and lodging are all excellent, but it tends to turn into a bit of a "boys club" after 10pm, so not the best place for spending the night with your wife.

You can't go wrong with any of the Oregon Coast. The northern coast tends to be a little busier as it is closer to the Portland etc, and as you come south, it mellows out more.

Keep in touch, and if it works out, I'd be happy to take you guys out and show you our little playground from the air.

Timing may be tight with my trip to Minnesota, but let me know when you're nearing Portland. I can take you cub flying and barnstorming, just not off airport.

Re: Roadtrip to Portland - Advice and meet some BCP members?

Hi Marc, Sounds like a fun road trip you have planned! I live in Central Oregon too about five minutes from Smith Rock State Park (where Tyler used to do some Rock Climbing). Unfortunately I'm not a climber but there are some local guide companies that could steer you in the right direction or if you have your own gear there is plenty of oportunity out there for every skill level.

I'll keep an eye on this thread from the shadows but am pretty tied up for the three days you'll be in the area. I may have time on the 1st but will only know for sure as time gets a little closer and I enjoy meeting new folks from this site so hopefully something will work out. Perhaps if Kelly is able to take you guys up I can meet you all at a destination/strip somewhere??

Feel free to PM if you have any questions.

What do you mean by scary accommodations? We might be able to help you out there depending on what kind of accommodations you're looking for. Maybe you could borrow our van:

We could start with a flight to give you the last of the land, and then you could go explore it from the ground :)

If you get that far north, the Tillamook Air Museum is reported to be very well worth visiting.

Not been there myself except for flying past it in the T-craft.

The cool old blimp hangar is still there, but didn't the museum collection move to Madras?

Yep, all the planes are in Madras, literally two minutes off of Hwy. 26 on the way to Portland from central Oregon.

Re: Roadtrip to Portland - Advice and meet some BCP members?

+1 for staying in Bandon. We go over there a couple times a year and rent this cool little house on the beach. Runs about $100 a night and has great beach access and within walking distance to Tony's Crab Shack and only a few miles from the airport. I also like Floras Lake and Cape Blanco. Floras Lake is a blast if you are into windsurfing/ kite boarding...but also cool to just paddle around or cross the sandbar over to the beach. Brookings is a little busier, but lots of really nice beaches nearby. Take the time to explore as you drive down the coast from Bandon to Brookings. You will find lots of really cool places along the way.

Oops, sorry, didn't realize the museum moved.

What happened, the FX and green screen guys went after the blimp hangar?

Evergreen is a must-do in McMinnville.

Tillamook still does have a museum and a few aircraft. I met a guy that volunteers for them and they had just ferried something up from one of the boneyards. http://www.tillamookair.com/aircraft/ I think looking at the Blimp Hangar itself is worth a stop.

Hey Zane,

Im planning to see Evergreen to see the Spruce Goose again. Unsure if it will be a day trip or on our way out of Portland toward the coast.
