Rocky Mountain Aviation Expo--at Fort Collins/Loveland KFNL

The annual Rocky Mountain Aviation Expo, which has been at Front Range in the past, will be at KFNL this Saturday, June 21st. Here's a link to the website: http://www.rmaexpo.org/

Mark Baker, President of AOPA, will have a town hall meeting over the lunch hour.

I've volunteered to help man the Angel Flight booth, and I'll have my airplane there as well--we're putting 2 of the Angel Flight aircraft on display in addition to the booth, both with AFW decals on them.

There will be several seminars which should be interesting. There will be a number of aviation vendors, including food for both breakfast and lunch. And of course, there will be airplanes!

Flying or driving to KFNL is easy.
Flying: It's a non-towered airport, fairly busy on weekends, 8500' x 100', standard pattern, TPA 6000' (1000' AGL), multiple instrument approaches if necessary, CTAF and Unicom 122.7, AWOS 135.075.
Driving: It parallels I-25 on the west side of the highway. From the south, take the Crossroads Boulevard exit, turn west, take the frontage road north to the airport, turn west onto Earhart Road--big sign at the entrance. From the north, take the Windsor exit, turn west, take the frontage road south. Caution--do not turn at Rockwell--that dead ends into the industrial area of the airport--continue south to Earhart Road. All of the activities are near the Jet Center using their ramp and hangar.

Man, this would've been a fun event to fly into from BJC. Headed to Idaho on Thursday for a wedding though.

I'll probably fly over from Longmont, if there's other BCPers that want to meet up?

Yeah, Kevin - I've not seen you in a while. Me and the boy (el capitan) will be flying over in the crazy daisy from boulder 8ish or so for pancakes. Look for us.

How mad are they going to be when I land on the grass over there? Wait, nevermind - I didn't ask that question.

Cary, I seem to keep missing you at the fly ins. I hope to shake your hand at one of these deals.

I was glad to meet a couple of other lurking BCP'ers at FNL.

Good to see you too, Kevin. We need to get out and fly soon.

Re: Rocky Mountain Aviation Expo--at Fort Collins/Loveland K

Yesterday's event was very successful. In spite of rather sparse advertising locally, there were a lot of folks there, both aviation-oriented and just aviation-interested. The vendor list grew right up until the last minute, so that there was a lot to see. Since I was at our Angel Flight booth most of the time, I didn't get to peruse the vendors, but they lined the hangar walls pretty completely. The Flight Line Grill out of Longmont did a great job on the food, both for breakfast and lunch.

We had many stop at our booth and ask about Angel Flight, we signed up a couple new Angel Flight pilots, and several others took the application with them, promising to fill it out later. We also made contact with some local folks in the medical provider community who will be able to help us connect with the powers that be with that community. So overall, our time was well spent.

AOPA President Mark Baker's talk, which was interesting, followed a platitudinous speech by our local mayor which promised great cooperation with general aviation--which belies the long standing political infighting which takes place between Fort Collins and Loveland which has stagnated the airport's growth and operations as long as I've lived in the area.

Before the speaking began, an older gentleman from the Denver area sang the National Anthem a capella. Before singing it, he said that he always imagines himself singing to his buddies with whom he served in Korea, and he asked the audience to picture the many who serve and have served our country. It was a superb performance.

Mark flew in, in his Caravan on amphibious floats, a rather dramatic entrance. It was one of many interesting airplanes, which included several warbirds, several LSAs, the local helicopter EMT services, a huge ag spray plane, and several experimentals. I talked with people who had flown in from as far away as Colorado Springs. I was introduced to Mark Baker, too, but that was very brief--seems very personable, though.

The weather cooperated until mid afternoon, when thunderstorms came into the area. When they started to get closer than my comfort level, I packed up and left, to get my airplane back to its hangar at Greeley, which was a little after 2 p.m. By the time I drove back home, the storms were all around, although there wasn't a lot of rain.

Definitely a good day.
