This great little strip gives a taste of the backcountry while being close to where a lot of us live. Washington State owns and operates about a dozen airstrips in the state. Most are grass and many are up in the Cascade Mountain Range. Most of these grass strips close from October 1 until June 1 because the ground gets too soft from all of our fall and winter precip. Come June 1, the good weather is here and pent up hunger for a taste of the mountains and grass affects all of us in the area. I planned to fly to Skykomish on Monday, June 2nd, and wasn't surprised to see 3 other pilot buddies on the ground when I arrived.
