What a sad deal. I can think of few worse ways to go. Be careful out there with running aircraft.

Just seen a post on another forum from a close friend of Jay. Prayers for the friends and family members.

Re: Sad day in AK: Jay Baldwin killed in propeller accident

When flying the Iditarod this year, a friend let me stage out of his place at Wolflake. Jay's hangar and home are right next door. Ran into him several more times as he leads a group of pilots along the trail every year. He had taken the group up to Serpentine the day before we were there. A very energetic guy who had found a way to make a living showing others his love of flying and the adventures Alaska has to offer. Sad sad deal.

Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

God help us all.

We loaded with engine running. For cooling both piston and turbo. Fewer potential hot starts on jets. I hated that part of a fine job. I kept my fingers on the two mag switches and got very grumpy with any loader without one hand on my wing when in front.

I believe the plane got away during hand propping. Huge bummer indeed.

Re: Sad day in AK: Jay Baldwin killed in propeller accident

I was trying to remember where I had seen Jay Baldwin before. I knew it was in a video somewhere. There have been videos posted here from Vimeo of a group of Isreli pilots that were bush flying in Alaska with Jay. I never met him but he looks like he was a great dude.

One of the video's here:

Go to 7:58 to see him tell a story. He is very animated. Looks like he was living the dream.

I've watched that video before, and I loved his rendition of "The Cremation of Sam Mcgee". He seemed like a guy you would want to hang out with.

"Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect." Captain A. G. Lamplugh

condolences to his family and hopes for many wonderful memories to lessen the loss.

A sad day for the Baldwin family. I didn't put it together when I saw it here, but I saw his son Steve post that he'd lost his dad on Facebook. I know Steve from my time at Great Lakes airlines and he was always smiling. I can't imagine what he's dealing with now. I've been fortunate enough to do a lot of flying with my dad and like Steve said, my dad is still my favorite flying partner.

Losing even someone you don't know, but who is part of this "family" we all belong to, is very sad. Prayers for his family.

Preliminary NTSB is out. http://www.adn.com/article/20150611/nts ... mosquitoes

Idling to fend off mosquitoes. Totally against the regs on paper; totally comprehendible to anyone in real-world conditions. Awful tragedy any way you regard it.

One of the required emergency gear items in AK is mosquito headnets. It's not hard to imagine an emergency landing where you were otherwise ok, but effectively incapacitated by the swarms.

Condolences to Jay's people- terribly sorry for your loss.
