San Antonio?

Taking the family to San Antonio soon. What’s everyone’s favorite strip to fly in to. I need avgas and a rental car and not much else. I alway like to support the smaller places but I’m not afraid to fly in to the big airport if it makes sense. My first quick look I international airport, Kelly field, Randolph, and Stinson. Any reason I should go or avoid any of these. Looks like Kelly has the cheapest gas but that’s as far as I’ve looked so far. Thanks!

Re: San Antonio?

Stinson has some history and is a good GA airport=friendly. Haven't flown there for a few years so no idea on prices. Best access for south SA; but, pretty good highway system to get anywhere. As typical of larger cities= avoid rush hours.

Another one to consider is Bulverde Airpark (1T8). It's a nice place with fuel a bit cheaper than Stinson (KSSF), Boerne Stage Field (5C1) or International (KSAT). About the same distance to downtown as Stinson, but North of town instead of South. I've been in there a couple of times, and it's a nice little GA airport.

It's been a few years, but Stinson has always worked out well. Easy to get rental cars, very GA friendly. I like Bulverde and Boerne Stage Field, but found getting transportation/rental cars more hit and miss. International was always more expensive for everything, though more convenient for stuff on the north end of town.

Re: San Antonio?

I flew into Kelley Field (KSKF) for my trips to San Antonio. They pulled my rental car up to the plane while I got it secured, and it was conveniently located to where I need to go. The west side of the runway is the Air Force base, but the east ramp is open to the public. I think it was Hertz that serves there: they don’t have cars on site, so you have to make the reservation on the phone and they’ll deliver the car to the fbo before you arrive and you leave it there when you depart. A word of caution if you go there, make the car reservation yourself. I agreed to let the fbo call it in and the price was twice what it was when I called hertz myself.

The FBO at Stinson (SSF) is a nice place and I would definitely go back there again. There are a couple good restaurants nearby too:

Hangar 6 at Garner Field (UVA) has a pretty good $100 hamburger. It’s on the north side of the field right next to the FBO.

Sammy’s Restaurant has the best quesadilla I’ve ever tried. They are a quick drive from Castroville (CVB).
