San Diego to WA adventurous ideas!

Just flew down to San Diego with my adventurous boys, who are in their early teens.

Am going to head back to WA state late next week, and looking for cool ideas for places to stop, see stuff and hangout.

The boys are interested in cars, drag strips, STOL and air shows, off-roading, etc.

We were thinking of hitting the glamis dunes, and considering stopping at the boneville salt flats, and ???

Any cool places “along the way” you’d suggest? We could fly east as far as CO I think. ..

Any cool get together next weekend?

TIA!

When you return North, stay the night at Wild Billy Lake, the kids will like it for sure. 2000’ private dirt strip just north of Klamath Falls. Check out the website at Wildbillylake.com for specifics.

If you head towards Glamis keep going across to Sedona, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Telluride north to Grand Junction, Heber, Utah then up to Garden Valley, McCall Idaho maybe Johnson Creek then up to Spokane/ Sand Point. Watch the density altitudes in the mountains if it gets hot. Don’t fly through the mountains in the afternoons.

If you are on the east side Alvord is awesome. Denio or Rome Service for Breakfast.

The WAAM museum at Hood River has cars too.

Glamis is pretty much shutdown this time of year as temps in the area are now well over 100 F. Mayb riding ATVs in the Oregon dunes north of Coos Bay would be a good option.

Land in Florence, Oregon then, take courtesy car to Torex ATV Rentals and ride. Amazing place to ride on the beach and massive sand dunes. No place like it definitely a treasure.

I ride down there frequently:

Alvord is 42.527, - 118. 5260.

Realistically you can land and camp anywhere, but that spot is below the hotsprings. walk up and soak $6 I think. Nice tanks.

You won't have room but a bicycle is fun.

Re: San Diego to WA adventurous ideas!

This week is pretty hot. I'd be inclined to stay near the coast. I've never been but I understand you can camp by your plane at Oceano. Used to be able to rent ATV's to ride the sand, but I think that is over. Still might be nice to walk along the ocean.

Flying the coastline is beautiful: Big Sur, etc. The San Fran Bay Tour (Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, etc.) is described in another current thread. Then north over Point Reyes. Much of the coast route has steep terrain so no place to glide in the event of engine failure. I've done it in a BRS parachute equipped plane. Depends on your personal risk profile.

If you go inland and up into the Sierra Mountains, land at South Lake Tahoe airport, you can get a ride to the dock by Riva Grill restaurant and get parasail rides and I think they have that hydro wakeboard that lifts you off the water quite a ways. Stuff the boys should love. Plus flying around Tahoe, Emerald Bay, and Desolation Wilderness is pretty special.

Flying near Mt Shasta is stunning, but then you're used to big Cascade Volcanoes. If instead you follow the coast, Shelter Cove is pretty, but the lads may be bored. Nice hike to the black sand beach. Beware of getting fogged in.

Enjoy the time with them. Those were some of my favorite years with my boys.
