Seaplane at Lincoln Memorial

Just came across this very cool photo of a seaplane taking off from the reflecting pond in front of the Lincoln Memorial in 1923. I'm thinking it might be hard to get permission to recreate this stunt!

More good times (West of the Mississippi):

The Goose riding up the ramp at Pebbly Beach, Catalina. It delivered us to the boarding school, CIS (Wrigley's Island, same family who owned the Chicago Cubs).

Howard doing the "Wild Thing", L.A. Harbor. The "Spruce Goose" is right up the road from Newport City, Oregon these days. It's a must if you are into aircraft/seaplanes!

Considering the proximity of the capitol building and the White House (the nation's only white house), you're probably right. :)

It must of been a "Contractor" trying to sell seaplanes to Congress :D

Looked like a good place to showcase performance. :D

Nice find Rich! I would say it could be frowned upon. Just a guess though.

After seeing this picture below it made me wonder if I could get the Savage in and out of the Ohio State University campus today..... [emoji6]

Fort Worden near Pt Townsend WA is a state park now, but for many years was an active Army base. Along with Ft Flagler & Ft Casey, it's big guns protected Admiralty Inlet into Puget Sound. A lot of the movie "An Officer and A Gentleman" was filmed there. Several years ago, there was to be some sort of anniversary ceremony held there. Several privately-owned old military vehicles were going to be displayed, and our local Aero Museum volunteered a freshly restored Aeronca L3 Grasshopper, to be landed on the big grass parade grounds (site of the graduation ceremony in the movie). Plenty long so no big deal. The response was a resounding NO.

I was sitting in the "Customs Box" at Port Angels, WA after Canada departure. I saw this "Eye Candy" it flew away perfectly. A P51, B 29 were behind it somehow the pictures were lost. Never forget!

I suspect that was the Collings Foundation "Wings of Freedom" tour, they visit P.A. every year. Dunno about a B29, they tour with a B17, a B24, and a P51. Half hour rides in the B17 or B24 cost $450, and rides in the dual-control P51 cost $2200 for a half hour or $3200 for an hour.
A local guy I know popped for a Mustang ride-- he told me that after they found out he owns an Extra 300, a Beech T34, and has quite a bit of aerobatic experience, they wrung it out pretty good. Yeehaw!

Re: Seaplane at Lincoln Memorial

In Harry Truman's Spirit lake lodge there was a picture of a line of Seaplanes sitting on Spirit lake. I think he said it was an annual event. Some seaplane organization had a fly in at Spirit lake. I have done a lot of searching and haven't found much about it. Did anyone else here ever see that photo? It's under about 200 feet of Mt. Satint Hellens mud now.

This is all have have found.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Lamb. of Salem, were among the Ore gon fliers who participated in a mass flight of seaplanes into Spirit lake at the base of M' St. Helens, Wash. A dozen planes with two passengers each took part in the flight which was the first of more than two seaplanes to land at the lake at any one time. Though the lake lies at an altitude of 3200 feet none of the planes encount ered difficulty in taking off The flying group were breakfast guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Truman, operators of the lake restaurant.

I wish I could get at least one ride in a P-51 ! They all departed in front of me, B17, B29, P51 its was not real, still seemed like a dream come true. The B17/B29 started engines early I was guessing the warm up and preflight was more complex than the P51.
