SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

Hello all,
I see a few members two to be exact showed interest in sentimental journey. Four of us attend each year. We like it because it’s a lay back event with good food at reasonable prices, large camping areas, and showers are available on site. If camping is not to your likening area motels will pick you up. Events are spot landings, bomb dropping, visit to Lycoming engine plant, piper museum, rides in a DC3, live music, and a hole lot of BS. If you decide to come bring tie downs you cannot park with out them. Each year a man and wife fly a rans s7 from Florida, as well as a cub from Calif. Remember getting there is half the fun of being there.

Re: SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

I plan on going and camping there. Not sure which days yet, but probably get there Wed. or Thursday. I've planned on going a few times, but there always seems to be some massive incompatible weather system either here or part-way there. Anyway, I'm going to try again this year.

Baloney is still baloney, no matter how thin you slice it.

Re: SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

I'm going to try to get up there on Friday. The fathers day flyin at Shrevesport is Fri- Sun. Thought I'd chek out Sentimental Journey then come south and get a steak dinner at Shrevesport on the way home. My brother is going with me to LHV so I'll meet him at Shreves and leave the plane there Friday night. That way I can bring the wife and kids up to the Shrevesport for the festivities on Sat.

Re: SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

Well, I hustled like crazy to get a replacement tent pole so I would be ready for camping at Lock Haven. FedX just delivered it to my office in the pouring rain. Now I am sitting here and looking out my windows over the 28 acres my business sits on atop a 920 ft above sea level hill and hoping we are high enough! It is supposed to be like this the next couple days. Maybe my canoe would be more useful than my tent! #-o

Re: SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

Skystrider,

Let’s see, a Maule and 28 acres that you own, ...so how many times have you landed there? Or maybe, how many different strips do you have there?

I went out last week and mowed 12 new strips for Greg to play with. And none of them are even close to being level or flat. A couple of them will be new "steep records" for us. One for sure is so steep, that if you would stop, I feel sure the brakes would not hold traction and backwards you would go. The only control going back would be full power and steering with the rudder (in theory anyway). Going down it with a two wheel drive tractor, the rear wheels break loose and away you go. The 4wd holds back when mowing it though. They should make for great video in any case.

Now patrol guy, we both know that you need at least a 3,000 ft paved runway to take off and land Maules on. However, I am looking at the parking lot and thinking about that Zenith 701 with the Jabiru 3300 engine we are building! 8)

Re: SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

Hey that 701 will work fine. There are two of those in our neighborhood, and they don't take a back seat to anyone!
Has anyone ever built a tail dragger version of those?

Re: SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

You know I thought the 701 was ugly but making it a taildragger actually makes it worse! I thought I saw a picture of one on this site somewhere.

Re: SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

I flew in with three other guys on Wednesday. A PA-18, PA-11 and J-4? on floats. We flew from Rockland at 6 am stopped and picked the 11 and 18 at a private strip in the hills above Rumford, Maine. We flew over Mt Washington, then Killington and fueled in Rutland, VT. We picked up the J-4 at Cooperstown, N.Y. It was great weather until we got to PA. The last 30 miles was thru the "wind gaps", a series of valleys through the PA hills. It rained pretty good thru the wind gaps and was raining when we landed in Lock Haven. It was hard to sleep that night because it rained so hard the sound of it hitting the wings was deafening. The next day (thursday) cleared off a little and was partly sunny in the afternoon. They had the spot landing competition, which was won buy a young girl who flew in from Wisconsin in a J-3. Most of us got a chance to fly around the local area for a little while. We left Friday morning and had to pretty much fly the ridges and valleys all the way back. I refueled in Glen Falls and parted with the PA 18 and 11 at Rutland. I went through the valleys to the southeast and made it as far as North Andover, Mass. Saturday I flew up to a fly in at Windsock near Lake Ossipee N.H. We stayed there for and hour and headed back to Rockland. It was fun flying, 2000 foot ceiling and an easy 25 miles vis, but 8 miles from Rockland we had to turn around and go back to Wiscassett, the ceiling dropped below 500 ft (my personal limit). It was a great 4 days of flying. This was my first experience going to big organized event. The people we met there were very friendly and they organizers were helpful with transportation to and from town. I wish the weather had been better, they really expected a much bigger turn out.
