There are actually two books written about Claude Dallas, but for the life of me I can’t remember the other title. He gave almost no information to either author, mostly notes from everybody else.
Like many other stories they both should be given a lot of literary license. Mr. Dallas doesn’t live in Paradise Hills, but does visit periodically, according to my nearest neighbor. I get the feeling most of the local population wouldn’t care if he resided here as he was an outstanding worker and quietly, a nice guy.
What led up to the shooting, probably a combination of things from both perspectives. Dallas and Pouge had a history starting here in northern Nevada. The general feeling is if Dallas hadn’t put a mercy round behind the ear of the two officers he may have walked.
While I can not remember meeting Mr. Dallas, I am personally acquainted with many of the people in the books and there is no doubt he was probably harassed by some of the law enforcement personnel here, as was well documented in the news for throwing the homeless people in the Humboldt River to “clean them up”.
Did they deserve to die, probably not, but if you have something on the end of a chain and you keep jerking on it, you may get a reaction.
Dallas was convinced they were going to kill him, so he claimed in his defense, I would hazard that unlikely. Although him, and everything he owned might have ended up in the Owyhee River, I don’t think they would have risked a killing.
Justifiable, no way! And remember Dallas did go to prison, not a place for an extended vacation. I would leave you with this thought, when I went to work for the Lander County Sheriff’s Office, one of the supervisors told me if there was ever an enforcement officer that needed a bullet in the head it was Pouge.
So take it all with a grain of salt.
While aviation has made the world a smaller place, if you fall, it's still hard to miss!
