Re: Short field landing

There was nothing wrong with the DC-3 wheel landing because he got it slowed down before he wheeled it on.

Why accelerate from the water to the beach? Looked like he was still way to fast?
Might have been slower if had lost all lift at the landing point instead of just starting some deceleration??
Wasn't in the seat so hard to say!! Don't think I would waterski to a ledge tho!!
I always used the water to get slow and then right before getting to dry ground dumping flaps and sticking the tailwheel in the water to get slowed down a little more.
Once the Mains were on the dry ground he could have used way more brake and power to keep the tail down and got stopped a lot more quickly.
Granted it has been a couple of years since I did this fairly regularly so I might be all wet!!

Re: Short field landing

I agree with Blu. Use of low ground effect, even over water, is fine if we use it to slow down. In low ground effect, we need to make only rudder turns, using the aileron only to keep the wing level. He put the right wheel into the water first. Coordinated turns are dangerous in low ground effect as we could put a wing into terrain or water. Low ground effect approaches don't work in a crosswind because the side slip may put a wing or wheel into something short of the landing zone where we do want to put the upwind wheel down first.

Re: Short field landing

I dunno. Looks like the guy is just having fun. Beach is perhaps too steep for a clean transition, so he kisses the power to hop it over the steep part, keeps the speed up for a wheel landing and has plenty of room without wearing out the brakes. Plus uses the run out to place him a safe distance for a take off toward the water. I think I;ll practice that one.

Re: Short field landing

Exodus, we need to slow almost to stall speed before leveling the airplane on a wheel landing. Wheel landings give better control and visibility, but there is no need to go faster to do them.
