Shoulder belts for early 150?

Any chance these would bolt up?

If not, do you guys have a recommendation for shoulder belts for a fastback 150?

Re: Shoulder belts for early 150?

I would NEVER buy used seat belt/Harnesses for an airplane, certified or exp. Belts can be affected by a lot of things, sun exposure, chemicals, just plain old age, like me :D . I've seen some belts that kinda looked okay, but had some visible wear or maybe a little cut.....tiny, but which made them unairworthy.

Look, This is THE piece of safety equipment that is your last line of defense in an accident.....do it right. Here's a link to a page on BAS site, showing some accidents with terrible damage, but where the occupants survived: http://basinc-aeromod.com/testimonials/

BAS doesn't have systems approved for your plane, but You could try Hooker Harness to see what they can come up with. If nothing else, they can make a system to fit. Either will have to be signed off by a mechanic.....as would that used system you pictured. Non TSOd harnesses can now be installed per the FAA directive.

How much is your noggin worth?

FWIW

What Mike said, +1, for same reasons. Plus you'd need the STC.

I put Hookers in early C-172: Excellent quality and service, well-proven and engineered STC. At that time (~1992??) they didn't offer inertia reel, but do now, I think. BAS also very good, inertia reel handy for manual flaps, but don't know if STC'd for early C-150. Wag-Aero has STC'd set but I HATE their buckle hardware: There's a groove on the lap-belt tang that catches the shoulder harness tang about two times out of five   . Imagine you need to exit in a hurry..... I helped install Wag-Aero in a C-140 (structurally about the same as early C-150), and it was straightforward. I wish they'd fix their hardware problem. All of these systems mount to the rear spar "hat-section" carry-through structure, hiding behind the headliner.

In all cases best to use an I.A. with experience in these installations: They don't just bolt on. Check the various websites for installation details. Mike, can you share the citation that TSO is no longer required, specifically on the lap belts? I've been looking into this recently for another installation, and the I.A.'s I work with all say it its.

Crenshaw, is that your C-150 on the Salida airport cam, near Randy's C-172? :)

Thanks. cubscout

Re: Shoulder belts for early 150?

Just the answers I was looking for! I've been casually looking around for a harness solution and just happened to see that set show up on ebay. I guess I just filed it under "better than nothing" department?

I'll look closer into the hookers and BAS systems. I thought I remember BAS not offering anything for the 150 but things change. Inertia reel would be good (almost necessary?) in order to reach the flap handle.

Cubscout, yeah that's it next to Randy's on the ramp at Salida. Not there at the moment though, it spends 50/50 time here and in Boulder.

Re: Shoulder belts for early 150?

FWIW, a friend installed BAS harnesses in his older 150, the first model with a back window. Also not on the BAS STC, but our mutual IA had no problems getting a field approval. Basically the installation was the same as in my airplane (63 P172D). I'd be surprised if there's any real difference in your airplane.

And I really must echo MTV's comments--what is your noggin worth? When I had my one and only engine failure and landed in the field, I only had the OEM seatbelts--the BAS harnesses were on order but hadn't come in yet. Luckily I'm such a superb pilot ( ) that I didn't need them on that occasion, but while the airplane was down for the new engine, they were installed. To quote Jimmy Doolittle, "I'd never be so lucky again." The nice thing about the BAS over non-inertial-reel models is the freedom to reach the flap lever and anything that might fall on the floor (surely that happens to more people than just me!). BAS harnesses are truly excellent products.

I had hookers in my '69 150 and liked them. Now in the 180 though I will be putting BAS inertia reels in as its nice to be able to reach for things.
