Side Trips B4 or After Alaska Cruise

My wife and I are doing a VERY small boat Alaska Cruise. We'll be on the 22 passenger Mist Cove for a cruise from Juneau to Sitka in May. Most of the flying adventures described here are for points much further north than we'll see on this trip. Any suggestions or recommendations for some flying tours or other aviation options around either Juneau or Sitka? I fly a 180 Hp Maule taildragger and I'd like a visitor's introduction to Alaska flying before taking my own plane up north from the Seattle area next year. All info and pointers appreciated.

Was in Haines AK a number of years ago and tried getting a glacier tour with a local operator in one of his 185's but to no avail, mother nature was holding a grudge for a few days and couldn't get in the air.
If your cruise heads up that way, I'd say look into it, from what I read and the people I talked to, it is definitely worth looking into, that is if your cruise takes you that far into the inlet. Just my .02C worth....

Sitka has Harris Air. They are a 135 Air taxi. I’m not sure if they do some sort of canned air tours or not but buying an hour in their 185 would probably be pretty cool. The owner is a stickler for maintenance and doesn’t have low time pilots.

Juneau has Ward Air. Also a 135 Air taxi. I don’t believe they have a standard tour but they can also show you some country. Solid company, experienced ownership and good gear.

There is also Wings Airways in Juneau, they do a run out to the Taku Lodge in Turbine Otters for some kind of salmon bake. Thats pretty much a factory tour with a bunch of cruise ship folks. Nice airplanes.

The one that is super cool is the tour Paul Swanstrom does. He’s based in Haines I think. Mountain Flying Service. He’s got a beautiful piston Beaver he operates on skis and bush wheels depending on what he’s doing. He does an awesome tour with first class equipment. It’s not cheap but the experience is unreal. He routinely picks folks up in Gustavus where I live, I’m sure he would pick up in Juneau as well.

Sounds like you’re more of the low density type cruiser. I’d do Harris, Ward, or Mountain FS for sure.

Very Definitely a second on gbflyer's recommendation. I have talked to Paul a few times when he is down in Skagway picking people up< great guy, excellent plane and he does exactly what you are looking for and will also give you some great tips on flying the local terrain and weather.
Ward air is good, but they are more focused on getting people out/back to fishing/hunting spots
