Ski Destination

Any recomendations for a good downhill ski destination with easy access from the airport to lodging, night life, and the lifts? I'm located in northern NV so within a 2-hour flight or less, is Tahoe, Jackson, Sun Valley, McCall, Salt Lake City, Boise. I could strech that to 3-hours to hit a good spot. I've been to many of these places to ski and usually just drive, but now that two of kids are out of the house, I don't have to take a suburban load of stuff and can fly. So basically I'm looking for somplace where it's easy to just land and get around without renting a car, etc. & still be able to enjoy the local flavor. :D

Re: Ski Destination

Flying the long Eze over Lake Tahoe on a X-country, best weather and snow Id seen in a while so I landed at South Lake Tahoe , FBO dropped me off down town at the Rental store. A bus came by and took me to the hill. At the end of the day got a motel room between town and the airport. Naked girl in the hot tub by 10:30. It was a good day.

Snow Basin Utah. east of Ogden, is my all time favorite mountain. http://www.snowbasin.com/
Around 2500' verticle, Good fall lines, 1 gondola, bottom to top. Usually not may people. Ride the gondola up, enjoy a beer, get out, ski your ass of down the mountain, get back in and do it again. Makes for a pretty good day. I think the closest airport is Morgan Co.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Tamarack between Cascade and McCall!! I think they have a shuttle that will come pick you up at either airport.

Depends on where you are in NV, but Mt. Bachelor in central OR is pretty decent skiing within a couple hour flight. Sun River Airport (S21) is located near the mountain. Sun River has lodging, dining etc. with shuttles up to the mountain.

Re: Ski Destination

Consider flying to Truckee, CA. There is a shuttle service (tart) 9 minutes after the hour all day that goes directly to Northstar (10 minute ride), and another shuttle 25 minutes after the hour that goes directly back to the airport. I fly up for the day from Angwin (Napa Valley) quite often. The shuttle will also take you downtown Truckee or even to the casinos on the North end of the lake, although the shuttle might be called something else for that route. I have flown to South Lake Tahoe airport to ski Heavenly but they have no regular shuttle or even a bus line that I could decipher that goes regularly to the airport. Took a cab.$$$ Yikes!! Still a lot of fun, and when I get home about an hour later I'm not tired from the drive.

30 minutes from Pocatello, not a big time glamorous destination resort, but if can ski here you can ski anywhere. Lots of backcountry, cheap, and friendly locals, mostly. Very challanging compared to the typical ski area. Grand Targhee is a good bet too. Sun Valley is probably the furthest from an airstrip, Pebble the most convinent.

For me its a 5 minute drive from my strip, so I am biased!

Re: Ski Destination

Has anybody landed at Ogden airport? I'll be headed to snowbasin in March. Just curious seems closer than Morgan County, Utah.

Ogden is great. A little "big city" for me, but still nice. They have a little dirt strip 21L 3R that's about 1500 feet or so. I've never been denied to land on "the dirt" when I go into Ogden. They'll clear you "at your own risk", like landing wasn't that already. Nice controllers, nice cafe, I get my fuel in Brigham City but go to Ogden for lunch from time to time. I know they have a car rental outfit in the terminal.

Morgan would be closer to Snowbasin though. Not sure about ground transport there.

Re: Ski Destination

Sun Valley is great. They have free bus service all around SunValley/Ketchum; Ketchum has great burgers at Grumpy's and lots of other nice places, and even if no snow is falling they groom the mountain sooooo nice.

Re: Ski Destination

Wow what great recomendations. I'll have to try them all eventually although the wife may not approve of thae naked lady in the hot tub! It might take awhile so I'll have to start checking some of them out hopefully as soon as this weekend, if weather allows. Most of these I haven't been to or even considered before.

Thanks again. :D

I'm based in Ogden. Great airport. Friendly tower. Free tie downs for transients. Good cafe. The airport manager often flys his Super Cub to work from Huntsville.
