Ski…err…hull flying—SeaRey snow landing

Looks fun but the potential for hull damage seems high.

Kenmore ran Beavers and Norseman on floats and SeaBee's off the glaciers for years.

Yeah! I remember that video of Bob Reeve (?) or someone taking off in the Beaver on floats from a high glacier.

What I’ve rarely seen is the flying boat on snow. It somehow seems more risky to the airframe. Gash your floats, swap em out. Gash your Wigeon hull, more involved. Maybe?

If he keeps that up he will have to re-think his tail #.

Maybe they could have stayed in business if they borrowed that moniker and offered a keel reinforcement kit designed specifically for sastrugi.

Re: Ski…err…hull flying—SeaRey snow landing

Ive repaired floats and hulls that have landed on gravel, and a hull that landed on pavement. I was surprised at how little damage it really did. I'm sure it could have been worse in all the cases I saw. One hull was a SeaBee and one was a Lake. We skidded float planes on and off the grass a bunch when I was in WA and never damaged one. All that being said, I've seen them torn to shreds from seemingly nothing too.

That was not Bob Reeve, it was a fellow named Bill Frisk, long time Kenmore pilot and DPE who administered many check rides over the years.
