Skybolt kit for C172

Has anyone installed one of the Skybolt camloc kits for the C172 that originally had sheet metal screws into captive Tinnerman plates around the firewall?

https://store.skybolt.com/mobile/conversion-kits-c172c2800p-c347.aspx

Seems like there’s barely enough room on the firewall flange to mount camloc receptacles.

Curious to hear any experience specific to this installation.

Re: Skybolt kit for C172

A previous owner installed camloc cowl fasteners on my C180.
A lot of work to install, and kits aren't esp cheap.
On my airplane, there's ample room on the firewall flange for the receptacles,
but a couple of them are just outboard of the engine mount lugs making it a bitch to rivet them in place--
or in my case, tighten the rivets when they loosen up a few years later.

Camlocs are quick & easy when you R&R the cowl, but IMHO they do have some down sides.
I've broken the crossbar on a couple, had the adjustable part of the receptacle fail on one, lost a couple studs in flight.
Tinnermans with screws are slower but IMHO more bulletproof.
If a screw rattles out, it's easy & cheap to get a replacement. Ditto if a tinnerman strips out.
Personally I think I'd have stuck with the tinnermans, and spent my time & money on something else.

Yet again you’ve done a remarkable job of answering the questions no one asked. I’m very comfortable with the pros and cons of camlocs and camloc receptacles, Southco fasteners and even Dzus studs!

What I’m interested in is how well the camloc receptacles provided by the Skybolt kit fit on the very narrow firewall flange on certain Cessna 172, thanks. If anyone has any photos that would be awesome

This is a discussion site, and the nature of discussions is that they rarely stay on a narrow track.
Sorry if my "answering unasked questions" annoyed you.
But maybe my input will be useful to someone else.

Hahahaha. So true. The best part is there is NEVER any first hand experience. The posts always say, "a friend of mine..." or "a guy at a local airport..."

To your question: I just installed Camloc 2600s in a 170B. There is enough room and they work great.

Thank Greg! I think we’re going to give them a try on a friend’s C172F.

Re: Skybolt kit for C172

My 10 year old son and I installed Skybolt camlocks about 25 years ago on a C172E with an Avcon Conversion already under the cowl. Love it. No installation issues at all. I still have that plane. The camlocks replaced about 39 screws on the top and bottom cowl. After 25 years they continue to work great.
