Skywagon Down in Polson, MT

I just saw a news report about a Skywagon that made an emergency off-field landing near Polson, MT. I think everyone is OK, but nothing confirmed. Familiar looking airplane, let me know if I can help since I am not that far away. Hope all is well......

A family of three walked away from a small plane after it crashed Friday afternoon in Polson.
A couple and their small child were in a Cessna 180 when it crashed in a small field between Rocky Point Road and Flathead Lake near the Polson airport. The family was not injured, and the child was strapped in a car seat, Polson Fire Department Assistant Chief Pete Bishop said.
Bishop said he was driving away from his home on Flathead Lake when he saw the plane flying overhead. He said he could not hear the plane’s engine and it appeared the plane may have lost power.
“They went over the top of me and then the pager went off,” Bishop said.
The airplane is registered to Matthew Schantz of Larkspur, Colo. The pilot and his wife declined to be interviewed. The plane was loaded with what appeared to be camping gear.
High winds were prevalent in Polson Friday afternoon, with gusts reported by the National Weather Service at 30 mph.
Friday’s crash was the third airplane crash near Polson in the last six months.
In December one man died when a Piper Cub crashed near Irvine Flats.
Last month a crop duster airplane crashed on Irvine Flats. The pilot was not injured in that crash.

Family walks away from small plane crash in NW Montana

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) -- Authorities say a Colorado family, including a 2-year-old boy, walked away from a single-engine plane crash in northwestern Montana.
Lake County Sheriff Don Bell tells The Missoulian the pilot, who is the boy's father, reported engine failure as the plane approached Polson Airport on Friday afternoon. The man tried to glide the plane toward a large field, but strong headwinds forced him to crash land in a much smaller field.
The plane's front landing gear was wiped out in the crash, and the propeller, nose, tail and one wing were damaged.
Bell says the family declined medical treatment, but "they'll probably have the typical seat belt marks" that come with a sudden stop.
Investigators have not released the names of anyone involved.

POLSON — A Colorado family, including a 2-year-old boy, walked away from a single-engine plane crash Friday afternoon near the Polson Airport.

Lake County Sheriff Don Bell said the pilot, the boy’s father, reported that his engine failed as he was approaching the airport at approximately 2 p.m.

The man attempted to glide the plane toward a large field north of U.S. Highway 93 and west of Rocky Point Road, but strong headwinds forced him to put down in a much smaller field between Flathead Lake and Rocky Point Road.

The plane wound up sitting a safe distance north of Bear Harbor Condominiums.

Bell said the plane traveled just 115 feet after touching down before winding up facing the opposite direction.

The plane’s front landing gear was wiped out, and the propeller, nose, tail and one wing suffered damage.

Bell said the family declined medical treatment.

“They’ll probably have the typical seatbelt marks,” that come with a sudden stop, Bell said.

The parents and boy were still at the site a half hour later, sitting in a pickup, but declined to be interviewed.

Re: Skywagon Down in Polson, MT

We spent the evening with Matt and his family last night, and while they are physically fine, imagine the toll this kind of event takes on a flying family. Probably the less attention and speculation we give it, the better for Matt. I will say though, he did a great job with the hand he was dealt.

The family being all together with little harm is the important point, in my opinion. Being physically unharmed is a miracle. Good wishes to the family and I'm sure they will get thru it and get to better things soon.

This could of been anyone of us and our loved ones.

Matt, I'm so glad you and your family were able to walk away from the wreck. Airplanes can be replaced but people can't.

Cessna Skywagon -- accept no substitute!

Re: Skywagon Down in Polson, MT

Good job putting it down. 115' in a pasture with engine failure and walking away is a good day. A few useable parts left over is a bonus.

Saddle back up as quickly as possible and ride on brother!

Oh man! I've been out flying the last few days and just got on and saw this. Matt, I'm so sorry to hear about your plane but so glad to hear that you are all ok. I know how much you all were looking forward to this trip. As Jo said, nice job getting it in the ground and protecting your family. You all will be in our thoughts and prayers!
