sound systems

I rode in an otter the other day and it had a plug on the dash that you could plug your ipod or satelite radio into. it played through all the headsets and cutout for the radio. does anyone know were you can get a setup like this? so far all I can find is headsets with there own plug but they only play to that headset.

I think most modern intercoms have a channel for auxiliary input. Garmin, PS Engineering, et al.

I know the top 2 PS Engineering have 1/8" stereo miniplug jacks on the faceplate.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

I have what you describe. It came as an option with my 4-place Flightcom 403 intercom. It is a sweet ticket.

Even the more basic PS Engineering intercoms have an aux input. You just need to wire a jack to it. I have the PM3000 and it does the nice soft-mute "ducking" of the music when there's any traffic on the radio. Pretty cool.

The theme from Monty Python's Flying Circus (Sousa's Liberty Bell) makes for great background music when taking up new passengers! \:D/

My PS Engineering battery powered 2 place intercom has the aux input. The trouble I have it that is does not turn up loud enough to hear.

You gotta be careful about the loudness. You don't want to think that the feminine voice saying "PULL UP - PULL UP" is part of the sound track!

My PS intercom's aux input is split and has two different jacks, one for the front seats and the other for the back seats. That way Mom and Dad don't have to listen to their DVD's of PSP etc.

mine had it in there when I bought it... took me a year to realize it was there. Nice to have sat. radio or the ipod on those long trips. Now just have to figure out where all the static is coming from? With intercom off, no problem.

Yup, Garmin girl absolutely gets her panties in a wad sometimes. On a particularly steep approach, I think she said, "PULL UP, PULL UP, OH PLEASE PULL UP . . . WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!" (or something like that :) )

I have the Garmin GMA-340 panel as well. There's a pin on one of the back plugs that, if grounded, boosts the audio amplification of the aux input by 30 db IIRC (see pinout). The audio has to be pretty clean though, as the 340 will do a good job of boosting any noise. I have a small switch installed on the panel to toggle the boost that's convenient for dumping most of the audio when approaching airports etc. Also have a switch to control whether the music mutes for intercom (it always does for the radio as that's the wired in default).

Are you sure she isn't saying "PULL OUT, PULL OUT"?

The gain problem is a function of an impedance mis-match between aircraft audio (@300 ohms) and iPod (and every other "sound machine") audio out of 3 ohms.

A simple impedance matching circuit will fix it, placed on the audio input jack. We have to do this with radio telemetry equipment installed into the airplane's audio system, since all the radio telemetry receivers are also 3 ohm output.

I keep hearing that most "new" audio panels have a 3 ohm input on the miniature input jack, but I've never met one that did.

my music from my I-pod has been cutting out sometimes and I don't know why. Maybe it's this 3 - 300 mismatch. What exactly do I need to do in total novice terminology and directions? :?:

Loving life and thankful for each day I am blessed with!

I had a PS Engineering intercom when I had the 182 and the music in volume was controlled by the volume knob of the intercom. Because it was designed that way. I now have a Garmin 340 audio panel that is also an intercom and the intercom volume knob has no effect whatsoever on music volume and it is barely audible. Because it too was designed that way. There's a mod your avionics shop can do that makes the volume knob control the music volume too.

Don't tell my PS intercomm that it isn't matched impedance wise  , I use my HP 4705 as an mp3 player and with the Zulu headset, it's truly Hi-Fi. The PS intercomm has seperate volume controls for the front and back seats as well, and as BM pointed out PS controls the volume of the input device through the intercomm volume controls. Unfortunately with mine it's all of the volumes, you can't split out the radio, intercomm and music seperately.
The software on Media player on my 4705 has an equalizer and "preamp" that will really boost the volume, so maybe that is why it works even if it's impedance mis-matched?

Another trick if you fly solo alot, fly multiple a/c, or other peoples airplanes and just need an occasional music fix, is to plug in an amplified safety cell or cell set and use a radio shack adapter to plug the 2.5 mm lack into your Ipods 3mm-1/8" hole.
I have used both in Ag aircraft and they do just fine even in that high noise enviornment.

Take care, Rob

Hi-Fi?? Good Lord how old are you? Are you sure the intercom will adjust the radio volume, my PS(the PM1000 II I think) didn't do that and neither does the Garmin. The radio volume was only controlled by the radio volume knob.
