Sounds of the Skywagon

Finally got around to posting this to the Tube, hope you like it.

I wanted to try to capture the real sounds of the airplane, if it weren't for all the wind noise it might be possible #-o Nevertheless, I left any fancy editing and music out...just view and listen on your home computer with a subwoofer to bring out that wonderful sound of the Continental O-470.

As usual, I only had one camera to work with, so this was shot over multiple days, flights and camera mounting spots. As far as this video goes, I wish the cockpit views weren't overcast days, but those clips have their own beauty with the late afternoon sun peeking under the layer and lighting up the green hills around King City (Gives you an idea of how long ago I took these).

Edit: Not sure why the video doesn't work, it shows up in the preview...

Re: Sounds of the Skywagon

Really like the video. Two scene's especially. The one where you get out of the plane with that puzzled look, like "where am I?". And the other, my favorite, where you walk by the camera mumbling to yourself. Too cool.

And I see you've been listening to Zzz's request for video showing the pilot doing stuff. I've been planning on adding some of that to mine but I figure everyone will make fun of me when I take the POH out so I know what to do to land the thing. ;-)

Nice vid. Thanks.

Great video. That is fun to watch. What camera do you use? It didn't look like a Gopro, at least I didn't notice the typical fish-eye distortion.

Nice video. But what was the funny looking black surface you landed on at the end?

Nice video, Aaron! Looks like you've found some good spots down there. I'm gonna have to head down that way soon and do some flying with you.

Re: Sounds of the Skywagon

Sweet video! What area are you flying? Looks like some nice spots.

Here is one from a few years ago that caught some pretty decent O-470 music:

It's all within a few minutes of the Mesa Del Ray airport in King City, CA. Definitely lots of cool places over there, best flying is in the late fall/winter/early spring. I miss it for that reason...

Phil, funny you should mention those things, I was pretty sure people would be wondering about those. The "puzzled look" came after walking past the fuel vent on the wing. I heard a slight gurgling sound, and instinctively turned to investigate....but it was something I'd heard before so I just turned back around. It does that once in a while, not sure why...

The "mumbling" was me pacing off the landing area "golf style", one yard at a time  I'm pretty accurate like that, all those years playing golf have paid off. Although, not usually practical since its best to know those distances BEFORE you land  I'd been in there with the cub before so I knew it was barely long enough for the wagon.

It was indeed a GoPro Hero 3. Was set to only 720 for these clips, I was using a smaller card back then because I couldn't get the iPad to recognize the bigger card for some reason. I think the 720 helps tame the prop artifact a little too, not sure. Also, for some reason the prop artifact is almost non-existent in the cockpit view...I don't have a filter on the camera, but my windshield and side windows are tinted and I think that helps.

I don't live there anymore Rob, I'm down in Fresno now living at Sierra Skypark. You (or anybody else) can stop by anytime...still looking for good spots to play around here Not nearly as many #-o

To paraphrase Jeremy Clarkson, the o470 is made of Otis Redding.

Nice video!

Do a fly-over with a stop watch-- at 70 mph you're doing 100 feet per second.
Use the wing strut as a bombsight-- click the stopwatch when it hits the start of the strip, click again when it hits the end.

Re: Sounds of the Skywagon

I love the sound of ANY wagon, but I especially love the sound of a 185 with the proper propellor (come on, you knew this was coming - dial the volume to full):

Ah, I see... I knew you moved to Fresno a while ago and figured that was in the foothills to the east or something.

Mine does this after every flight, left side only. Is it normal??
