My wife and I are planning on heading down to Southern Utah this weekend for a brief couple days of R&R. I'm looking of advice on where to go. I'm lookin for a strip that ~2000 ft long and smooth enough for my little tires. Thought Mineral canyon might be ok but I'm just not sure. Looking for someplace warm, with hiking and can put up a tent for the night.
Has anyone been into Mineral Canyon lately? I know that the county graded it last month, and the concern was that it was smooth but very soft. One guy I talked to said it was ok for bigger tired tailwheel planes, but he thought it was to soft for much else.
Whee! Just for you, we all got together and decided to put on a fly-in for you and your wife. See you at Caveman. I'm not sure when you will be heading down, but we will be leaving mid-day on Friday from Ogden. If you come through the area and want to fly down together, let me know.
I know I'm totally gonna miss out on the fly-in; I was planning on going till I realized the date was the same as my anniversary. My wife said we could go but I know it isn't really what she wanted to do this weekend.
Any ideas other than the fly-in??? We plan to leave IDA at 6am Friday then turn around and come back late Saturday. i really have no clue where to go...I've never been to SE Utah before. Wishin I had Fly Utah right now.
Gary, I really do feel bad that we will be missing the fly-in.
I was thinking Hidden Splendor but then I read the info in ubcp.org and it said it was one of the more difficult strips. The runway looks fine but the steep terrain all around has me concerned.
Thanks for the offer Pat but I think I'll get it worked out, the local FBO has them I think. The original plan was to drive to Moab and take our boats and bikes. I really didn't want to drive that much but we were pretty set on going to the Moab area. Flying down and camping at Angel point or something will work out nicely. Just gotta decided where to go.
Try Ibex. Remote, desolate, and beautiful. Land south of the island, if your first time. I even left a stack of firewood for you at the south end of the island.
geez Whee... If you want to go to Moab just come to the fly in... it's about 10 miles down river from Moab.. I know cause I drove down to Caveman last summer from Moab one day. It's a dirt road but in good shape even for two wheel drive..
I would second Shortfielders suggestion or Dolores point. It's 3300 feet long and on a mesa top about a 3 minute flight to Gateway where you can take your wife for a anniversery dinner that she won't be disappointed with.
"Colin We were excited to heli in Silverton — until we saw the bird. Looking like something your stoner uncle built in the garage out of four Meccano sets, a fish tank, and an AMC Pacer, this helicopter seats a pilot plus two only, making it a tricky vehicle, logistics-wise, when your group has 8 people in it. Did some looking into the strips down there. The plan is Hidden Splendor; if I'm not totally comfortable when I look at it we will head to Mineral Canyon. If that's not good we'll go to Angel Point. If we don't like Angel Point we will head for Caveman.
Just a thought Whee, don't know what your flying or ability, but it does sond like you are unfamiliar with the strips. Maybe go to Hanksville Green River first, unload and go check out the others by yourself, or atleast lighter, and see how it goes. Hanksville has a dirt runway also Gary
